Staff Product Development Engineer
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
Staff Product Development Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for returns debug, RMA execution, and failure analysis for data-center CPU/GPU products within Quality & Reliability. The role isolates root causes of customer returns and field failures, drives corrective actions, and improves product quality through cross-functional collaboration.
Works with ASIC, validation, firmware, hardware, and program teams to reproduce failures, perform system- and board-level analysis, and maintain advanced test infrastructure.
Experience Level
Senior (Staff level). The posting does not specify years of experience, but the role expects demonstrated senior-level experience in product debug and failure analysis.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Perform system-level and board-level failure analysis (FA) for data-center CPU/GPU products, including customer returns and field failures.
- Conduct system-level tests (SLT) on internal or customer platforms to reproduce reported failures and isolate causes.
- Perform board power-up and functional tests to isolate board- or component-level faults.
- Collaborate with ASIC engineering for die-level investigations and root cause analysis.
- Investigate excursions and critical issues and support DPPM/VF/NFF improvement initiatives.
- Drive test coverage analysis and enhancements to improve failure detection and mitigation.
- Partner with validation, firmware, and hardware teams to resolve hardware, software, and platform issues.
- Design, prototype, and evaluate FA tools and maintain server rack test infrastructure (air and liquid cooling) for advanced testing.
- Document debug findings, root causes, and corrective actions in clear technical reports; support customer-facing communications for failure analysis.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- Hands-on experience with system-level and board-level debug and failure analysis for complex hardware platforms.
- Experience with system-level test procedures, board bring-up, and functional verification to isolate hardware/component failures.
- Proficiency with Linux and software development for test/automation (examples: Python, C/C++); ability to develop and maintain debug code and testbench tools.
- Strong hardware debugging skills and familiarity with test equipment (multimeter, oscilloscope, thermal camera) and reading electronic schematics/datasheets.
- Ability to work across global, cross-functional teams and produce concise technical reports and failure analysis documentation.
Nice-to-have:
- Knowledge of GPU or x86 architecture, server/data-center platforms, and power-management features (POST, P-states).
- Experience with industry interfaces and standards (PCIe, USB, HBM) and JTAG debug methods.
- Familiarity with BIOS/memory firmware, PC hardware debugging (voltage, networking, storage, thermal control), and server installation/maintenance.
- Experience with additional languages and tools such as C#, Java, HTML, and machine learning/AI tool usage for analysis.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Computer Engineering is preferred.
