Job Title
Staff Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
The Staff Physical Design Engineer combines hands-on implementation expertise with technical leadership. The role is responsible for complex block and top-level physical design for advanced-node SoCs and leads a small team of engineers to ensure high quality and timely delivery.
Experience Level
Mid-level, typically requiring 8–12 years of experience in physical design or an equivalent level of mastery.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Own end-to-end physical design implementation, including floorplanning, power planning, placement, CTS, routing, and ECO for complex blocks or subsystems.
- Drive closure on timing, IR/EM, signal integrity, and physical verification while ensuring PPA and quality targets are met.
- Define hierarchical PNR strategies, IO ring structures, and integration guidelines for large SoCs.
- Analyze and debug tool issues, timing failures, and design anomalies, proposing robust solutions.
- Develop and maintain physical design methodologies and scripts.
- Provide technical direction to a team of engineers and mentor junior staff in PNR and debugging practices.
- Work cross-functionally with RTL design, STA, DFT, CAD, and packaging teams for implementation-friendly architecture.
Requirements
Qualifications include:
- Strong experience in physical design implementation for complex digital SoCs.
- Expertise in industry-standard PNR and signoff tools.
- Success in closing designs on advanced nodes that are timing, IR, and congestion-critical.
- Solid understanding of floorplanning, power grid, PDN methodologies, clock tree design, STA constraints, and physical verification.
