Staff PCB Layout Engineer
ArmJob Title
Staff PCB Layout Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver complex PCB layouts for Arm's hardware platform team to support evaluation of custom SoCs and reference designs used for software development, validation, and partner/customer demonstrations. The role focuses on high-speed, high-density board designs for embedded compute platforms and works closely with packaging, SoC, and manufacturing teams.
Experience Level
Senior (Staff). Specific years of experience not stated.
Responsibilities
Key day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with hardware, packaging and project teams to convert mechanical, thermal and electrical requirements into PCB designs.
- Create footprints, component placement, power plane optimisation, and routing for high-speed parallel and serial signals.
- Perform escape routing for high-density SoCs and FPGAs and advise on stack-up and rule set feasibility.
- Produce final deliverables: ODB++, Gerber, fabrication and assembly drawings, and BOMs.
- Work with PCB fabricators and contract electronics manufacturers (CEMs) for DFM/DFT, assembly and supplier alignment.
- Participate in design reviews and provide guidance on manufacturability, design rules and substrate technologies.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Proven experience designing complex, impedance-controlled multi-layer PCBs (including >20 layers) and HDI designs.
- Experience with very high pin-count devices (>2000 pins), high-speed interfaces such as PCIe and DDR, differential pairs, and high-current PDNs.
- Experience collaborating with chip packaging teams and advising on pinout, routing topologies, cost and layer trade-offs.
- Detailed knowledge of escape routing for dense SoCs/FPGAs and ability to estimate routable IO for a given stack-up and rule set.
- Understanding of Signal Integrity (SI) and Power Integrity (PI) considerations for routing strategies.
- Extensive knowledge of PCB fabrication (conventional and sequential), IPC standards, stackups, substrate materials and via structures.
- Proficiency with EDA tools, specifically Cadence OrCAD CIS and Allegro PCB.
- Ability to work with fabricators/CEMs on DFM/DFT and assembly and to align designs with supplier capabilities.
- Strong interpersonal and review skills to advise engineers on design rules and manufacturing constraints.
Education Requirements
No specific degree or field of study is required or listed in the posting. One certification is mentioned as desirable: Certified Interconnect Designer (CID, CID+). The posting does not state equivalent-experience language or minimum academic qualifications.
