Staff Hardware Design Engineer
PsiQuantumJob Title
Staff Hardware Design Engineer
Role Summary
Support the Electronics team by owning hardware designs that are integral to the system architecture and physical framework of a silicon-photonics quantum computer. Work in cross-functional teams with thermal, mechanical, firmware, and optical engineers to deliver designs that meet system and manufacturing requirements.
Experience Level
Senior β 7+ years of relevant experience in product development and release to volume manufacturing.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Design schematics and oversee PCB layout for analog and digital circuitry (high-speed transceivers, 10+ Gbps electrical and optical links, FPGAs, microcontrollers, clock distribution, power supply filters, inrush current limiters, power distribution).
- Ensure signal integrity and implement EMI suppression strategies across designs.
- Design and build test setups for electro-optic modules and other hardware components.
- Characterize, optimize, and debug analog, digital, and electro-optic circuits using mixed-signal and sampling oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, signal generators, multimeters, and DC power supplies.
- Develop software to drive measurements and automate data capture.
- Analyze measurement data and extract key performance parameters.
- Maintain detailed documentation of hardware designs, test procedures, results, and design revisions.
Requirements
Key required skills and experience (must-have):
- 7+ years of experience in product development and successful release to volume manufacturing.
- Proven PCB schematic capture and layout experience for high-speed analog and digital systems.
- Expertise in signal integrity, timing/clock distribution, and EMI mitigation techniques.
- Hands-on experience with test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, VNAs, signal generators, power supplies).
- Experience developing measurement and data-acquisition software (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, C/C++ or equivalent).
- Strong documentation practices and familiarity with design/version control workflows.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with mechanical, thermal, firmware, and optical engineering teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with electro-optic or photonic modules and optical transceivers.
- Experience designing electronics for cryogenic environments or integrated with semiconductor manufacturing supply chains.
Education Requirements
Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field β or equivalent practical experience.
