Job Title

Staff Hardware Design Engineer

Role Summary

The Staff Hardware Design Engineer on the Electronics team owns hardware designs for PsiQuantum's quantum computer systems. This role delivers PCB and electro‑optic hardware that meets system architecture and the physical constraints of a large-scale quantum computer while working in cross-functional teams (thermal, mechanical, firmware, optical).

Experience Level

Senior — requires 7+ years of relevant product development experience, including release to volume manufacturing.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include design, verification, testing, and documentation of analog, digital, and electro‑optic hardware for production systems.

  • Create schematics and oversee PCB layout for analog and digital circuitry, including high-speed transceivers and 10+ Gbps electrical and optical data links.
  • Design and implement FPGA, microcontroller, clock distribution, power filtering, inrush current limiting, and power distribution solutions.
  • Ensure signal integrity and EMI suppression are addressed in designs.
  • Design and build test setups for electro‑optic modules and other hardware subsystems.
  • Characterize, optimize, and debug circuitry using mixed-signal and sampling oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, signal generators, multimeters, and DC power supplies.
  • Develop software to automate measurements and drive test equipment.
  • Analyze measurement data to extract performance parameters and iterate on designs.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of designs, test results, and design changes; work closely with manufacturing teams to enable release to volume production.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience for successful candidates.

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in product development and release to volume manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated experience with PCB schematic capture and layout for mixed-signal systems.
  • Hands-on experience with high-speed transceivers and multi-gigabit electrical or optical links.
  • Experience designing power distribution, filtering, and inrush current protection for complex systems.
  • Proven signal integrity and EMI mitigation skills.
  • Practical test and characterization experience with oscilloscopes, VNAs, signal generators, multimeters, and power supplies.
  • Ability to develop measurement software and automate test flows.
  • Strong documentation and cross-functional collaboration skills to support manufacturing and system integration.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with electro‑optic modules, silicon photonics, or cryogenic-compatible electronics.
  • Experience working with semiconductor foundry or high-volume manufacturing partners.

Education Requirements

Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical field — or equivalent practical experience.
