Staff Functional Safety (FuSa) Engineer
Role Summary
Lead functional safety activities for Synopsys automotive IP (DesignWare) to ensure ISO 26262 conformance across the product lifecycle. Work with global product teams and automotive customers to integrate safety requirements into IP design, verification, and release processes.
Drive safety analyses, documentation, automation, and reviews to reduce time-to-compliance and improve repeatability across multiple IP product lines.
Experience Level
Senior β typically requires a Bachelor's degree plus 8+ years relevant experience, or a Master's degree plus 7+ years, with substantial automotive functional safety experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Own functional safety compliance for DesignWare IP products and ensure ISO 26262 conformance across development lifecycle.
- Develop and review ISO 26262 work products: Technical Safety Concepts, FMEDA, FTA, DFMEA, DFA, Safety Plans, and Safety Cases up to ASIL D.
- Collaborate with global product teams to integrate safety requirements into architecture, design, verification, and release processes.
- Engage with automotive customers to address functional safety, quality, and reliability questions and provide compliance documentation.
- Build automation scripts and tools to streamline safety analyses, improve consistency, and scale workflows across projects.
- Lead and participate in functional safety reviews, audits, and assessments and deliver clear, actionable findings.
- Maintain and improve functional safety methods, templates, and processes to align with evolving standards.
Requirements
Core skills and experience required or strongly preferred.
- Must-have: Formal training in ISO 26262 and demonstrated experience applying it to hardware development in safety-critical applications.
- Must-have: Hands-on experience qualifying systems to ISO 26262 ASIL levels, including ASIL D, and producing FMEDA/FTA/DFMEA and Safety Cases.
- Must-have: Proficiency reviewing and producing ISO 26262 work products and guiding design teams on safety-driven engineering decisions.
- Must-have: Practical understanding of semiconductor development flows and digital IP/SoC design.
- Preferred: Experience with ISO 26262 Part 5 (hardware level) and familiarity with hardware description languages (Verilog, VHDL, SystemVerilog).
- Preferred: Ability to write automation scripts (Python, Perl, or similar) to scale safety analyses and reporting.
- Preferred: Experience engaging directly with automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers on safety assessments.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) with 8+ years relevant experience, or Master's degree with 7+ years. Formal ISO 26262 training is expected.
