Job Title

Staff FPGA Engineer - RF Comm Systems / Simulink

Role Summary

Design and deliver FPGA firmware and embedded processing solutions for RF communications and networking as part of a cross-functional hardware and software engineering team. The role spans algorithm translation, FPGA architecture and implementation, verification, integration, and sustainment for low-cost FPGAs, SoCs, and SoMs.

Experience Level

Senior level - requires extensive experience (job specifies 10+ years) designing and verifying FPGA-based systems.

Responsibilities

Execute the full FPGA/firmware development lifecycle and collaborate with RF, DSP, firmware, software, and test teams to bring communications products to production.

  • Translate algorithms (MATLAB/Simulink) into FPGA implementations and optimize generated code.
  • Architect, design, implement, simulate, and verify HDL (VHDL/Verilog) firmware for FPGAs and SoCs.
  • Develop and maintain ICDs and interfaces between FPGA and host processors or messaging/data-handling subsystems.
  • Establish firmware development workflows, simulation, verification, and system test practices.
  • Perform integration, test, debug, and sustainment on PCBAs and systems using standard EE test equipment.
  • Support productization and production readiness activities for embedded communications systems.

Requirements

Key must-have skills and relevant experience; preferred items are listed separately.

  • Must-have: 10+ years designing, implementing, and verifying FPGA-based systems using VHDL or Verilog.
  • Experience using code generators to translate MATLAB/Simulink algorithms into FPGA implementations.
  • Proficient in C and C++ and experienced with RTOS-based embedded software.
  • Demonstrated experience with cross-functional hardware and embedded product development from concept to production.
  • Familiarity with common MCU, CPU, and FPGA devices and standard interfaces (Ethernet, I2C, SPI, PCIe, USB).
  • Familiarity with flight software architectures and embedded systems development processes.
  • Proficiency with basic electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators) and testing PCBAs.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Nice-to-have: experience with wireless communications systems and computer networking.
  • Familiarity with high-reliability/aerospace designs and aircraft systems architectures (redundant systems).
  • Knowledge of DO-254, DO-178C, DO-160, DO-311A and MIL-STD-810/704/461.
  • Experience implementing enhanced security measures and designing/troubleshooting complex communications PCBs.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, Code-GPT).

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience.
