Staff Field Applications Engineer – Power
Analog DevicesJob Title
Staff Field Applications Engineer – Power
Role Summary
The Staff Field Applications Engineer – Power supports Analog Devices datacenter power solutions with a focus on the IVR (Empower) portfolio. The role provides customer-facing technical leadership across evaluation, simulation, design-in, bring-up, validation, and production readiness.
Works with Tier-1 customers to translate requirements into robust power delivery solutions and coordinates cross-functional activities to ensure successful design-in and production deployment.
Experience Level
Senior - requires about 5+ years in Power Field Applications Engineering in customer-facing roles; experience with DC-DC converter design and high-current point-of-load applications is expected.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities cover customer engagement, technical design support, validation, and delivery of board-level power solutions.
- Engage customers onsite and virtually to gather requirements, present proposals, and guide evaluation through production readiness for ADI datacenter products (including IVR/Empower).
- Translate system requirements into power solutions and validate implementations during bring-up and qualification.
- Develop and maintain design collateral: specifications, simulation models, schematics, layout guidance, and reference designs.
- Evaluate prototypes, troubleshoot failures, and perform lab and system testing using oscilloscopes, Bode plotters, load emulators, and automated measurement setups.
- Analyze power delivery networks and power integrity; produce board-level reference designs for high-current, low-voltage applications (SoCs, processors, xPUs).
- Manage multiple customer engagements, coordinate schedules, and travel as required for presentations, design reviews, and lab work (approx. 10% travel).
Requirements
Key technical and practical requirements. "Must have" items are essential for immediate success; "Nice to have" items are beneficial.
Must have:
- Minimum ~5 years in Power Field Applications Engineering supporting Tier-1 customers.
- At least 3 years designing DC‑DC converters: component selection, system design, simulation, and lab characterization for PMICs and multiphase bucks (<1V, high current 300A+).
- Hands-on lab experience with bring-up and automated characterization; familiarity with test equipment and scripting for automated tests (Python).
- Experience in PCB design, layout, and optimization; Cadence Allegro preferred.
- Proficiency with circuit simulation and correlation to lab results (SPICE, SIMPLIS, MATLAB).
- Experience with PDN and power-integrity analysis using SI/PI tools (e.g., Pathways, Sigrity).
- Ability to manage multiple customer projects and meet customer timelines.
Nice to have:
- Experience specifically with datacenter power architectures and high-current point-of-load reference designs.
- Experience developing simulation models, schematics, and layout guidance for customer deliverables.
Education Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) required. Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) in power electronics preferred.
