Job Title
Staff Engineer - SSD Hardware Design
Role Summary
Lead hardware design, validation and qualification for Micron SSD products (E3.S, E1.L, E3.L, U.2 and related evaluation/test boards and daughter cards). The role owns hardware across the product lifecycle and coordinates with simulation, firmware, mechanical, and test teams across time zones.
This is a technical leadership role focused on high-performance storage interfaces, power delivery, signal/power integrity, and hardware validation automation.
Experience Level
Senior-level β requires substantial experience. The posting specifies a minimum of 10+ years of experience in hardware design, validation, debugging and system-level root cause analysis.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include leading SSD hardware design, ensuring compliance, and driving validation and production readiness.
- Lead design and development of SSD hardware and test/evaluation boards for EDSFF (E3.S, E1.L, E3.L) and U.2 form factors.
- Define PCB stack-up, via technologies, design constraints, and perform SI/PI analysis.
- Simulate and analyze design proposals; review results and recommend optimal design practices.
- Perform hardware validation, characterization, worst-case analysis, and debugging through the product lifecycle.
- Perform measurements with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, logic analyzers and protocol analyzers; document and communicate results to cross-functional teams.
- Automate hardware validation and characterization tests, including Python-based automation and integration of AI tools where applicable.
- Ensure designs meet industry (IPC) and regulatory (UL, IEC) standards; maintain design documentation, test reports and FMEA.
- Collaborate proactively with SI/PI simulation, mechanical, firmware validation and global Micron teams.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; nice-to-have items are listed separately.
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in hardware design, validation, debugging and system-level root cause analysis.
- Deep experience with PCIe (Gen5 and Gen6) including PCIe Base and CEM specifications.
- Experience with LPDDR4/5, NAND memory technologies and related interfaces.
- Strong knowledge of power delivery components: DC-DC converters (buck/boost), PMICs, LDOs, load switches and Power Loss Protection (PLP).
- Thorough understanding of Signal Integrity (SI), Power Integrity (PI) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements and analysis.
- Hands-on measurement and validation experience using oscilloscopes, power analyzers, logic analyzers and PCIe/protocol analyzers.
- PCB back-end experience: stack-up definition, via technology selection, and setting layout/design constraints.
- Experience automating hardware validation using Python; familiarity integrating automation with AI tools is advantageous.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for cross-geography collaboration.
- Ability to document design artifacts, test procedures, and FMEA; assume ownership through product lifecycle.
Nice-to-have: ONFI interface experience, prior SSD form-factor development, advanced PCIe analyzer expertise, and prior work with PMIC characterization tools.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field was specified.
