Staff Engineer, PDE CEM
Role Summary
As a Staff Process Development Engineer in PDE-CEM, you will develop and optimize assembly and packaging processes to improve yield, reliability, and manufacturability. The role supports NPI, product qualification, and technology transfer while partnering with manufacturing, yield, process integration, reliability, and equipment engineering.
Work emphasizes data-driven process characterization, failure analysis, and cross-functional technical leadership to enable high-volume manufacturing.
Experience Level
Senior-level; typically requires 5+ years of semiconductor industry experience in process development, failure analysis, yield engineering, or related areas.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include process development, yield improvement, data analytics, NPI support, and technical leadership.
- Develop and optimize Process of Record (POR) for assembly and packaging technologies; define process windows and capability targets.
- Design and execute DOE and SPC studies; apply statistical methods (JMP, Six Sigma) to characterize and improve processes.
- Lead root-cause investigations (RCA, FMEA, OCAP), analyze failure mechanisms, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Perform advanced characterization and failure analysis to drive early process learning and increase first-pass yield.
- Use manufacturing, yield, and equipment datasets to identify trends, build anomaly detection, and enable predictive process monitoring.
- Support NPI, technology transfer, and product qualification; establish POR/TOR and BOM controls for transferred products.
- Coach and mentor engineers; lead cross-functional teams and align stakeholders on complex development programs.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; nice-to-have items listed below.
- Hands-on experience in process development, characterization, failure analysis, or yield engineering in semiconductor manufacturing.
- Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics and materials-science fundamentals.
- Proficiency with advanced characterization tools and defect analysis (SEM, TEM, FIB, AFM, spectroscopy).
- Practical experience with DOE, SPC, RCA, FMEA, control plans, and OCAP methodologies.
- Ability to analyze large manufacturing datasets and convert results into actionable engineering solutions; familiarity with yield analytics and visualization tools.
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally and drive technical alignment in a manufacturing environment.
- Nice-to-have: exposure to data science or machine learning concepts, Industry 4.0/smart manufacturing, and deploying AI-enabled process monitoring.
Education Requirements
Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, or a related discipline (as stated in the posting).
