Job Title

Staff Engineer, Module Hardware Validation

Role Summary

The Staff Engineer will lead competitor benchmarking, teardown analysis, and technical assessment of DRAM module hardware to inform design, validation, and product strategy. This role partners with design engineering, validation, and product teams to drive design improvements, risk mitigation, and competitive positioning.

Primary work includes mechanical/electrical reverse engineering, SI/PI/thermal analysis, performance benchmarking, and maintaining a competitive intelligence repository. The role also mentors junior engineers and produces executive-ready technical reports.

Experience Level

Senior — typically requires 8+ years of relevant industry experience in DRAM module design, validation, or system-level hardware engineering.

Responsibilities

Accountabilities for this role include hands-on technical analysis, cross-functional collaboration, and knowledge-sharing:

  • Lead end-to-end module-level competitor analysis covering mechanical, electrical, and architectural comparisons.
  • Perform teardown and reverse-engineering of competitor DIMMs (UDIMM, RDIMM, SODIMM, MRDIMM), analyzing PCB layout, routing, stack-up, materials, and shielding.
  • Identify and analyze non-DRAM components on modules (PMIC, voltage regulators, RCD, SPD, data buffers).
  • Analyze signal integrity (SI), power integrity (PI), and thermal design choices and compare against internal and JEDEC reference designs.
  • Benchmark performance, margins, reliability, and design trade-offs across speed grades and use cases.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineering, Validation, and Product Engineering to influence design choices and mitigate risk based on competitive findings.
  • Develop clear technical reports and executive summaries highlighting insights, risks, trends, and opportunities.
  • Build and maintain a competitive intelligence repository and database tracking BOM, design changes, and product evolution.
  • Mentor junior engineers and improve competitor-analysis methodology and best practices.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience:

  • 8+ years experience in DRAM module design, validation, or system-level hardware engineering.
  • Strong understanding of DRAM module architecture, manufacturing, and JEDEC standards.
  • Experience with high-speed signaling fundamentals (DDR4/DDR5) and related interfaces.
  • Familiarity with PMICs, voltage regulators, RCDs, SPDs, and module sideband interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware teardowns, schematic and layout reviews, or lab-based analysis.
  • Ability to independently drive technical investigations to conclusions and present findings to senior technical and leadership audiences.

Nice-to-have:

  • Prior exposure to competitive benchmarking or industry intelligence roles.
  • Familiarity with oscilloscope-based measurements, SI/PI simulation tools, ATE/UHS environments, or PCB-level product engineering.
  • Experience influencing design decisions across global, cross-site teams.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field was specified in the source. (Equivalent practical experience is not explicitly stated in the source.)
