Job Title
Staff Engineer, Digital Design Engineering
Role Summary
The Staff Digital Design Engineer leads RTL and digital implementation for complex blocks and subsystems, owning the design flow from specification through physical implementation. The role partners closely with DFT and physical design teams to achieve timing closure and production-ready silicon.
Works on global design programs and contributes to methodology, coding standards, and design reviews to improve execution predictability and product quality.
Experience Level
Senior β staff-level engineer (typically 7+ years of relevant digital design experience).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include end-to-end RTL and physical-aware digital design for complex IP and subsystems.
- Lead RTL development and architecture for complex blocks and subsystems (Verilog/SystemVerilog).
- Execute full digital design flow: synthesis, static timing analysis (STA), and timing-closure activities.
- Collaborate with DFT teams to integrate scan and test features and balance test tradeoffs.
- Support place-and-route activities and implement ECOs to meet timing and power targets.
- Partner with physical design to diagnose and resolve layout-dependent timing and power issues.
- Participate in design reviews and document design specifications and implementation results.
- Contribute to design methodology improvements, coding standards, and mentor junior engineers.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, tools, and behaviors required to perform the role.
- Proven expertise in digital circuit design and RTL development using Verilog/SystemVerilog.
- Practical experience with digital design flows: synthesis, STA, and physical implementation.
- Experience with Cadence Genus for synthesis.
- Experience with Cadence Innovus for place-and-route and physical implementation.
- Working knowledge of DFT concepts and ability to collaborate on scan/test integration.
- Strong English written and verbal communication and ability to work across global teams.
- Able to travel approximately 10% of the time.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with complex SoC or mixed-signal designs and advanced CMOS processes.
- Familiarity with industry-standard digital interfaces.
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading technical initiatives.
Education Requirements
Not specified.
