Staff Characterisation Engineer
Role Summary
The Characterisation Engineering team performs lab-based testing and measurement for high-speed analogue and optical semiconductor devices to ensure product quality and performance during development and production transfer.
This role supports laboratory characterisation, test automation, and data analysis, working closely with design, validation, and product engineering teams in a collaborative R&D environment.
Experience Level
Entry-level — recent graduate. Suitable for candidates at the start of their career (0–2 years) with structured learning and mentorship provided.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include hands-on test execution, test setup development, automation, and data-driven analysis to characterise device behaviour under varied conditions.
- Support testing and characterisation of high-speed optical and mixed-signal ICs using laboratory equipment across voltage and environmental conditions.
- Develop and improve test setups involving PCBs, lab instruments, and measurement systems.
- Create and maintain automation scripts (primarily Python) to improve test efficiency and repeatability.
- Analyse measurement data to evaluate device performance and support product characterisation reports.
- Collaborate with engineers across design, validation, and applications to support development projects and transfer findings into engineering actions.

- Strong interest in electronics and applied engineering.
- Basic understanding of electronic principles: voltage, current, power, and timing.
- Willingness to learn programming; Python experience is beneficial.
- Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team.
- Curiosity, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for hands-on laboratory work.
Nice-to-have:
- Previous exposure to electronics labs, university projects, or internships.
- Basic familiarity with Python or other scripting languages.
- Awareness of PCBs, semiconductor devices, and signal integrity concepts.
Education Requirements
Recent (or soon-to-be) graduate with a 2:1 or above in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline. Equivalent relevant academic qualifications in related technical fields are acceptable.
