Staff Application Engineer – Physical Implementation
Role Summary
Provide technical leadership for customer engagements on physical implementation: diagnose and resolve synthesis, implementation and verification issues, deploy and benchmark Synopsys implementation technologies, and capture requirements for R&D. The role combines hands-on flow development, customer-facing support, and cross-team collaboration.
Experience Level
Senior (Staff) level. Typical guidance: at least 5+ years of experience in synthesis and physical implementation or equivalent EDA experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Solve complex PPA (performance, power, area) and formal verification challenges using Synopsys implementation technologies.
- Develop, debug, and optimize synthesis and RTL-to-GDS implementation methodologies and flows.
- Benchmark Synopsys solutions against competitors to displace alternative flows and demonstrate superior results.
- Identify design and EDA tool issues, deliver actionable resolutions, and support customer problem closure.
- Translate technical findings into product requirements and drive tool enhancements with R&D.
- Deploy new tool features and enable customer migration to the latest releases and technology nodes.
- Act as a customer advocate internally and represent Synopsys in external technical discussions.
- Collaborate closely with R&D and product teams to shape future technology directions.
Requirements
Core qualifications and skills:
- Minimum 5+ years experience in synthesis and physical implementation with strong debugging ability.
- Proven experience driving methodology changes to meet PPA targets on complex designs.
- Advanced scripting skills (TCL, Unix shell, Perl) for automation and debugging.
- Practical experience with synthesis and formal verification tools and flows.
- Customer-facing experience with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with AI/ML-based implementation techniques and competitive benchmarking.
- Experience enabling customer migrations to advanced process nodes.
