Staff Analog Engineer
SemtechJob Title
Staff Analog Engineer
Role Summary
Design and deliver analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits from system-level specification through silicon characterization and production support. Work within a cross-functional team including digital, firmware, verification, layout, test and application engineers to implement optimized analog blocks and system-level solutions.
Experience Level
Senior — minimum 4+ years of experience in analog CMOS integrated circuit design.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include system and block-level design, verification, and silicon bring-up.
- System design: analyze top-level specifications and optimize system architecture (≈25%).
- Analog block design: define specifications, design transistor-level circuits, and support production (≈25%).
- Design verification and documentation; oversee layout for designed blocks (≈20%).
- Silicon lab evaluation, characterization, and hardware debug (≈10%).
- Block and system modeling (≈5%).
- Provide technical support to test, product and application engineering teams (≈10%).
- Coordinate interfaces with digital, firmware, verification, layout and other cross-functional teams (≈5%).
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and qualities for the role.
- Strong analytical, synthesis and problem-solving skills.
- Practical experience designing transistor-level CMOS analog and mixed-signal blocks and systems, including IC technology, layout awareness, and common blocks such as ADCs, DACs, sensor interfaces, switched-capacitor circuits, power management (LDOs, bandgaps, biasing), amplifiers, oscillators, PLLs, comparators, and filters.
- In-depth knowledge of analog/mixed-signal trade-offs: speed, power, noise, mismatch, linearity, stability, and area.
- Proficiency with IC design CAD tools: schematic entry, SPICE and mixed-mode simulation tools.
- Experience using lab instruments (oscilloscopes, power supplies, meters) and common measurement methods for silicon characterization.
- Independent, self-motivated, rigorous, and able to follow through; strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of system-level aspects such as signal processing, mixed-signal integration, digital interfaces, modeling, test and application requirements.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with high-resolution, low-power ADC architectures and techniques.
- Familiarity with Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre/AFS, Siemens Symphony, Matlab, and Verilog/VHDL.
- Experience in analog/mixed-signal behavioral model development and verification.
- Experience developing circuits for consumer and/or ITA markets.
Education Requirements
M.S. in Electrical Engineering or higher.
