Job Title

STA Staff Engineer

Role Summary

Work on static timing analysis (STA) and physical implementation for ASIC/SoC blocks. Lead timing closure activities, develop and execute STA fixes and ECOs, and collaborate with physical design and verification teams to meet performance, power, and area targets.

Experience Level

Senior / Staff level. Preferred STA/physical implementation experience of 8+ years; minimum experience varies by degree (see Education Requirements).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on STA, timing convergence, and physical implementation support across process corners and PPA targets.

  • Perform static timing analysis and develop timing constraints for blocks and full-chip views.
  • Identify critical timing bottlenecks and implement fixes to achieve timing closure.
  • Prepare and apply complex ECOs (Tweaker/Tempus/physical PT ECOs) across multiple corners.
  • Work with synthesis/place-and-route teams using industry tools to optimize timing and power.
  • Collaborate with verification, RTL, and physical design teams on integration and signoff criteria.
  • Drive PPA improvements while maintaining design quality and manufacturability.

Requirements

Concise list of technical requirements. See Education Requirements for degree-and-years combinations.

  • Must-have: Strong practical experience in STA, constraints, and timing closure workflows.
  • Must-have: Hands-on experience with industry tools such as PrimeTime (PT), Tempus, Genus, Innovus, ICC or equivalent.
  • Must-have: Experience preparing and applying ECOs for timing convergence across multiple corners.
  • Must-have: Proficiency in scripting (Perl, TCL) for flow automation and debug.
  • Must-have: Strong fundamentals in digital timing, physical implementation concepts, and PPA tradeoffs.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with deep submicron process nodes and high-performance/low-power implementation techniques.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with power-minimization techniques and advanced STA optimizations.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, or related field with 4+ years of ASIC design/verification/validation/integration experience; OR Master’s in Science, Engineering, or related field with 3+ years of relevant experience; OR PhD in Science, Engineering, or related field with 2+ years of relevant experience.
