Sr. Systems Design Engineer
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
Sr. Systems Design Engineer
Role Summary
Member of the CGC-Tools team responsible for developing and sustaining AMD's debug infrastructure for client, graphics, and custom product lines. The role enables end-to-end debug capabilities including on-chip instrumentation, JTAG over USB-C, automated data capture, and server-side analysis across silicon bring-up, validation, customer debug, and production.
Position is based in Austin, TX. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Experience Level
Senior level. Explicit years of experience not specified.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities span hardware, firmware, and software work to enable robust debug flows for multiple SoC programs.
- Design, implement, and maintain JTAG hardware and software components and related in-chassis USB-driven devices.
- Develop and extend Automated Debug System (ADS) services and distributed debug applications.
- Create Python libraries and tooling to capture and analyze debug data and assess IP block health.
- Specify firmware requirements and instrument mission-mode firmware to surface debug data.
- Support memory bring-up, scan infrastructure, and microcontroller-based on-chip debug features (DFD).
- Ship external JTAG device software releases and maintain QA automation and CI/CD pipelines for debug tools.
- Package and run debug services in containerized environments (Kubernetes) and maintain related infrastructure.
- Collaborate with IP, firmware, validation, platform, InfoSec, and customer engineering teams to enable secure, production-ready debug workflows.
- Participate in tool escalations, customer-facing debug support, and multi-BU readiness for upcoming SOCs.
Requirements
Core technical skills and behaviors expected for immediate impact. Degrees are listed separately under Education Requirements.
Must-have:
- Strong software, firmware, or hardware debug experience and system-level debugging skills.
- Practical familiarity with JTAG and JTAG-based hardware tools.
- Proficiency in Python and experience with low-level data manipulation for debug data processing.
- Experience with Linux-based tooling and environments.
- Experience building or operating containerized tools and automation (Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines).
- Ability to work cross-functionally across multiple SoC programs and communicate with IP/firmware/validation teams.
- Self-starter who can define specifications and drive tasks to completion with strong attention to detail.
Nice-to-have:
- x86 system knowledge and SoC internal architecture understanding.
- Experience in C, Java, or JavaScript for tool/firmware development.
- BIOS, platform design, validation methodologies, and familiarity with USB and scan infrastructure.
- Experience securing debug data transport or working with InfoSec on VPN/tunneling for debug devices.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
