Sr Staff Engineer — Physical Design
Role Summary
Senior individual contributor responsible for leading physical-design implementation and signoff for complex SoC blocks. Works with RTL, verification, and tapeout teams to deliver timing-, power- and area-optimized layouts on advanced process nodes.
Experience Level
Senior — typically 7+ years of relevant physical-design experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead place-and-route and signoff for large digital blocks and full-chip integrations.
- Define and implement floorplanning, placement, clocking, power-rail and routing strategies to meet timing, noise, and power targets.
- Debug and resolve timing, congestion, ECO, and DRC/LVS issues during implementation and signoff flows.
- Develop and tune P&R flows and automation scripts to improve quality-of-results and turnaround time.
- Collaborate with architects, RTL designers, physical verification, and backend teams to manage trade-offs and schedule risks.
- Mentor and review work of other engineers; provide technical leadership and design reviews.
- Contribute to methodology and tool evaluation for advanced nodes and low-power techniques.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Extensive hands-on experience with digital physical design flows (floorplan, placement, CTS, routing, signoff).
- Proven expertise in STA, timing closure, ECOs, and congestion resolution.
- Experience with commercial P&R and signoff tools and flows (industry tools such as Synopsys/PrimeTime, IC Compiler/Fusion Compiler or equivalent).
- Strong scripting skills (Tcl, Python, Perl or similar) to automate flows and debug issues.
- Experience targeting advanced process nodes (e.g., 7nm/5nm or similar) and low-power design techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects and mentor junior engineers.
