Job Title

Sr. Staff Embedded Software Engineer - Security

Role Summary

As a senior embedded software engineer on the MCU software team, you will lead technical development and extend Ambiq’s Secure Boot ROM/Bootloader and security-related SDK components for Apollo SoCs and emulation platforms. Work closely with architecture, SoC design, verification, SQA, and system test from design through silicon bring-up.

This is an on-site role in Northwest Austin, requiring hands-on hardware debugging and leadership in security and embedded firmware development.

Experience Level

Senior; requires 8+ years of embedded development experience. Team leadership or people-management experience (about 3+ years) is preferred.

Responsibilities

Lead implementation, verification, and maintenance of secure boot and security features across pre- and post-silicon phases; mentor engineers and coordinate cross-functional work.

  • Provide technical leadership and plan MCU software work for new products and features.
  • Maintain and extend Secure Boot ROM and Secure Bootloader for Apollo SoC and emulation platforms.
  • Design and implement security features in collaboration with Design, Architecture, Verification, and Applications teams.
  • Participate in pre-silicon validation (FPGA emulation), first-silicon bring-up, and post-silicon debugging.
  • Integrate and test runtime cryptographic operations using hardware accelerators.
  • Define and implement security test cases with SQA and System Test to ensure coverage.
  • Implement HAL and BSP components of the SDK and support toolchains and CI/CD processes.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred technical skills, plus authorization to work in the U.S.

Must-have

  • 8+ years of embedded development experience with bare-metal and RTOS systems.
  • Expert-level C; experience with C++ and object-oriented extensions.
  • Strong knowledge of ARM architectures, RTOS, and low-level drivers (I2C, SPI, UART).
  • Experience with Secure Boot, PKI, and cryptography (AES, RSA, ECC); familiarity with TrustZone and CryptoCell.
  • Experience with debuggers (JTAG, Saleae), GCC/Arm toolchains, and MCU IDEs (Keil, IAR, Eclipse, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Python and scripting (Bash); experience with Git.
  • Proven HW/SW debug and FPGA/silicon bring-up troubleshooting skills.
  • Authorization to work in the United States for any employer.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience leading teams or mentoring engineers; 3+ years of management experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and automated testing for embedded firmware.

Education Requirements

BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science (the posting specifies BS/MS in EE, CE, or CS).
