Job Title
Sr Staff Application Engineer
Role Summary
Hands-on, customer-facing senior applications engineer responsible for power electronics and power-management system architectures for Renesas' India market. Acts as the primary technical interface to customers and internal teams, owning reference designs, validation plans, system debugging, and application enablement.
Operates autonomously, mentors other engineers, and provides field-driven technical feedback that influences product and roadmap decisions.
Experience Level
Senior β requires 12+ years of experience in the power management space with customer-facing technical problem solving for semiconductor companies.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include customer technical leadership, reference-design ownership, system-level analysis, lab validation, and mentoring.
- Serve as primary technical interface for key customers across industrial, light EV, inverter/UPS, consumer power, and energy storage applications.
- Lead design-in, board bring-up, and on-site or lab debug activities.
- Diagnose complex system issues across power stage, control loops, sensing, firmware interaction, EMI, and thermal behavior.
- Architect and develop reference designs, evaluation platforms, and demonstrators using Renesas power products; own schematic review, component selection, and layout guidance.
- Create application notes, design guides, and technical collateral to improve customer adoption.
- Define and execute validation plans that cover real-world corner cases and system interactions.
- Perform and guide system modeling and simulation (SIMPLIS, PLECS, SPICE) and evaluate design trade-offs with BOM cost considerations.
- Operate and maintain lab test setups (oscilloscopes, network/Bode analysers, e-loads, power supplies, thermal rigs) and automate characterization with scripts.
- Support failure analysis, root-cause investigations, and RMA trend analysis.
- Mentor junior and mid-level applications engineers; help define best practices and participate in technical hiring assessments.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, professional attributes, and behaviours for successful performance in this role.
Must-have:
- 12+ years experience in power management and power-electronics applications with semiconductor customer engagements.
- Deep understanding of power topologies (buck, boost, buck-boost, isolated where relevant), control-loop theory and compensation, thermal design, power-loss modelling, and EMI/EMC at board and system level.
- Hands-on lab debugging and characterization experience with power circuits and silicon (oscilloscopes, spectrum/network analysers, e-loads, power supplies).
- Experience with circuit simulators such as SIMPLIS or equivalent; familiarity with SPICE/PLECS for system modelling.
- Programming ability in Python or C for automation and data analysis.
- Board-level analog and digital circuit design experience and familiarity with PCB CAD tools and layout best practices.
- Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to interface with customers and stakeholders and present concise technical summaries.
- Willingness to travel for customer engagements.
- Product-ownership mentality, self-driven, and able to lead cross-functional activities to completion.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with BMS ICs, gate drivers, MOSFETs, PMICs and related power components.
- Experience with FEA or thermal simulation tools and structured data-analysis tools (Excel, JMP).
- Familiarity with automotive/industrial standards such as AEC-Q, IATF, or ISO 26262 (functional safety).
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering or a related discipline (the posting specifies Bachelor or Master of Electronics Engineering related discipline).
