Job Title
Sr Principal Design Engineer
Role Summary
Senior CPU microarchitect responsible for driving microarchitectural definition and RTL implementation of major CPU blocks on the MIPS team. The role collaborates with performance modeling, verification, physical design, and software teams to deliver high-performance, power- and area-efficient processor IP and provides technical leadership and mentorship.
Experience Level
Senior β requires 15+ years of relevant industry experience (per posting).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Create microarchitectural specifications for major blocks, from early exploration through detailed definition in coordination with performance modeling.
- Design and implement RTL for major functional blocks and drive convergence to meet performance, timing, power, area, and schedule requirements.
- Support verification efforts: develop testbenches, test plans, and performance verification content.
- Collaborate with physical design and design-for-test teams to implement and converge physical design and testability.
- Provide technical leadership and mentor colleagues; take ownership of critical design challenges.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience:
- Hands-on CPU microarchitecture experience in one or more areas: instruction fetch/branch prediction, decode, scheduling, out-of-order execution, register renaming, integer/floating-point execution, exception handling, load/store execution, cache or memory subsystem/MMU design.
- RTL development experience using Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL.
- Experience with commercial simulators and hardware-debugging tools.
- Expert-level logic design skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience balancing timing, power, and area trade-offs and high-performance CPU microarchitecture techniques.
- Familiarity with ISAs such as RISC-V, ARMv8, or x86.
- Scripting skills and use of regular expressions; programming in assembly, C, or C++.
- Experience with emulators.
Education Requirements
Minimum Bachelor's degree (BS) required plus 15+ years of relevant industry experience as stated in the posting. The posting does not specify a required field of study or certifications.
