Job Title
Sr. Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join Amazon Leo's ASIC team to define and implement digital SoCs for Low Earth Orbit communications. The team develops modems, high‑speed interfaces, embedded processors, and DSP solutions in advanced process nodes.
You will develop back‑end strategies and drive physical implementation for communications chips that enable low‑latency, high‑speed links between space and ground.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Position expects 7+ years of experience in ASIC implementation and physical design.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include taking designs from architecture/RTL through physical implementation and sign‑off.
- Collaborate with RTL/logic designers to assess architectural feasibility and PPA (power/performance/area) tradeoffs.
- Drive IO and core block implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, pin/bus planning, place and route.
- Perform clock/power distribution, congestion analysis, timing closure, IR drop analysis, and ECOs.
- Execute physical verification and production sign‑off activities.
- Develop and improve physical design methodologies and flows.
- Evaluate third‑party IP and provide integration recommendations.
- Work collaboratively across physical design, RTL/architecture, and multi‑site teams.
Requirements
Key technical and eligibility requirements. Degree details are summarized in the Education Requirements section below.
- Must-have: Extensive ASIC implementation experience including synthesis, STA, DFT, and P&R for deep sub‑micron nodes.
- Must-have: Proven expertise in timing closure, physical verification, IR drop analysis, ECOs, and power/clock distribution.
- Must-have: Experience with congestion analysis, floorplanning, pin planning, and integration of complex blocks.
- Must-have: Strong collaboration skills with RTL/architecture teams and other engineering groups.
- Must-have: Authorization to work on controlled technologies — candidates must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, U.S. permanent residents, refugees, or asylees due to export control requirements.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with UPF low‑power flows and low‑power design techniques.
- Nice-to-have: Experience integrating RF/analog/mixed‑signal blocks with digital top flows.
- Nice-to-have: Experience working in multi‑site or multi‑team environments.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field is required or equivalent practical experience. Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field is preferred. The posting explicitly allows equivalent practical experience in lieu of a degree.
