Job Title
Sr. Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join the Amazon Leo ASIC team to define and implement digital SoCs for low-earth-orbit satellite communications and ground gateways. The role focuses on backend physical implementation, power-performance-area tradeoffs, and enabling high-speed, 5G-like links between space and ground.
Experience Level
Senior β typically requires 7+ years of relevant ASIC physical design experience.
Responsibilities
Implement and close physical designs for communications chips across the full backend flow and collaborate with architecture and RTL teams.
- Work with RTL/logic designers on architectural feasibility and PPA tradeoffs for physical design closure.
- Drive IO/core block implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, pin/bus planning, place-and-route, timing closure, and sign-off.
- Perform congestion analysis, IR drop analysis, power and clock distribution, ECOs, and physical verification.
- Develop and improve physical design methodologies and flows.
- Evaluate third-party IP and provide integration recommendations.
- Collaborate across multi-discipline and multi-site teams (physical design, RTL/arch, RF/analog integration teams).
Requirements
Key must-have skills and constraints; preferred items are listed when noted.
- Minimum 7+ years experience in ASIC implementation covering synthesis, static timing analysis (STA), DFT, and place-and-route for deep sub-micron nodes (must-have).
- Proven ability to drive backend implementation and physical design closure in advanced technology nodes (must-have).
- Experience with power/clock distribution, congestion and IR drop analysis, ECO flow, and physical verification (must-have).
- Strong collaboration skills to work with RTL, architecture, RF/analog teams, and cross-site teams (must-have).
- Preferred: experience integrating RF/analog/mixed-signal blocks with digital top flows; exposure to UPF low-power flows; experience in multi-site team environments (nice-to-have).
- Export control eligibility: must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum (must-have).
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field is preferred.
