Job Title

Senior Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Join Amazon Leo’s ASIC team to define and implement digital system-on-chip designs for communications between Low Earth Orbit satellites and ground gateways. The team develops modems, high-speed interfaces, embedded processors, and DSP solutions in advanced process nodes.

The role focuses on backend physical implementation and methodology for a set of communications chips enabling high-performance, low-latency space-to-ground links.

Experience Level

Senior — typically 7+ years of ASIC implementation experience.

Responsibilities

You will lead physical design implementation and methodology for digital SoCs and collaborate with RTL, architecture, and RF teams.

  • Perform synthesis, floorplanning, pin/bus planning, place-and-route, and timing closure for IO and core blocks.
  • Develop power and clock distribution networks, perform congestion analysis and IR drop analysis.
  • Execute physical verification, ECO, sign-off flows and resolve silicon-ready issues.
  • Drive power-aware design using UPF flows and low-power techniques (where applicable).
  • Define and implement physical design methodologies and automation to improve team throughput.
  • Evaluate and integrate 3rd-party IP; provide recommendations and integration guidance.
  • Collaborate across multi-site teams, RTL/architecture, and RF/analog integrators to ensure system-level feasibility.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, constraints, and workplace requirements.

  • 7+ years of ASIC implementation experience including synthesis, STA, DFT, and P&R for deep sub-micron nodes.
  • Proven experience in timing closure, congestion mitigation, IR drop analysis, physical verification, and ECO flow.
  • Experience working with RTL/logic designers to evaluate architecture trade-offs and drive physical feasibility.
  • Practical knowledge of physical design tools and flows (place-and-route, sign-off, power/clock distribution).
  • Ability to evaluate third-party IP and integrate into digital top-level flows.
  • Strong collaboration skills for multi-team, multi-site development environments.
  • Export control requirement: candidate must be U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or admitted as a refugee or granted asylum.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent. Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field is preferred. Equivalent practical experience accepted where noted.
