Job Title

Sr. Physical Design Engineer

Role Summary

Join the Amazon Leo ASIC team to define and implement backend physical design for communications SoCs used in Low Earth Orbit satellites and ground gateways. You will develop backend strategies and drive implementation for high-speed communications chips in advanced process nodes.

Work involves cross-functional collaboration with RTL, architecture, and RF/analog teams to deliver robust, low-latency satellite communication solutions. Amazon is an equal opportunity employer.

Experience Level

Senior-level β€” requires 7+ years of ASIC implementation experience (synthesis, STA, DFT, place-and-route for deep sub-micron nodes).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focused on physical implementation, performance optimization, and methodology development for communications ASICs.

  • Drive architectural feasibility studies with RTL/logic teams and evaluate power-performance-area trade-offs for physical closure.
  • Lead IO/Core block physical implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, bus and pin planning, placement and routing.
  • Perform timing closure, static timing analysis (STA), congestion analysis, and sign-off activities.
  • Design and optimize power and clock distribution; perform IR drop analysis and implement ECOs through sign-off.
  • Execute physical verification and ensure manufacturability for deep sub-micron nodes.
  • Develop and document physical design methodologies and flows to improve delivery and quality.
  • Evaluate third-party IP and provide integration recommendations.
  • Collaborate across RTL, architecture, RF/analog integration teams, and multi-site engineering teams.

Requirements

Essential skills, experience, and legal authorization for the role.

  • 7+ years of hands-on ASIC implementation experience: synthesis, STA, DFT, and P&R for deep sub-micron nodes.
  • Demonstrated experience with timing closure, power/clock distribution, IR drop analysis, ECOs, and physical verification to sign-off.
  • Proven ability to develop and operationalize physical design methodologies and flows.
  • Experience evaluating and integrating third-party IP into digital top flows.
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience working with RTL/architecture teams in multi-site environments.
  • Authorization: Due to export control laws, candidates must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Nice-to-have: experience integrating RF/analog/mixed-signal blocks, strong exposure to UPF low-power flows, and multi-site team experience.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline is required or equivalent practical experience. Preferred: Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
