Job Title
Sr. Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join Amazon Leo’s ASIC team to define and implement digital SoCs for Low Earth Orbit communications. The role focuses on back-end physical implementation of communications chips used for space-to-ground and gateway links.
The engineer will work with RTL, architecture, and system teams to deliver power-, area-, and performance-optimized physical designs in advanced process nodes.
Experience Level
Senior — requires 7+ years of relevant ASIC physical design and implementation experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include driving physical implementation and design-for-manufacturability for communications SoCs.
- Collaborate with RTL/logic designers to assess architectural feasibility and PPA tradeoffs.
- Lead IO/core block implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, pin/bus planning, place-and-route.
- Drive power/clock distribution design, congestion analysis, timing closure, and IR drop analysis.
- Perform physical verification, ECOs, and sign-off activities.
- Develop and improve physical design methodologies.
- Evaluate third‑party IP and provide integration recommendations.
- Work closely with other physical-design and architecture teams in a fast-paced, start-up-like environment.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and constraints are listed below; preferred skills are noted separately.
-
Must-have: 7+ years experience in ASIC implementation (synthesis, STA, DFT, P&R) for deep sub-micron nodes.
-
Must-have: Proven experience with timing closure, IR drop analysis, physical verification, and ECO/sign-off flows.
-
Must-have: Strong collaboration with RTL/architecture teams and cross-functional project experience.
-
Must-have: Export-control eligibility: U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card), or admitted to the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience integrating RF/analog/mixed-signal blocks with digital top flows.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience with UPF low-power flows and multi-site/multi-team development.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline is required or equivalent practical experience. Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field is preferred.
