Job Title
Sr. Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join the Amazon Leo ASIC back-end team developing digital SoCs for Low Earth Orbit satellite communications and ground gateways. The team defines modems, high-speed interfaces, embedded processors, and DSP solutions in advanced process nodes.
The role leads back-end strategies and implements physical design for communications chips, focusing on power-performance-area tradeoffs and design closure.
Experience Level
Senior β requires 7+ years of ASIC implementation experience (synthesis, STA, DFT, P&R) as indicated in the posting.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include driving physical implementation and collaborating across RTL, architecture, and system teams to achieve timing, power, and area targets.
- Collaborate with RTL/logic designers on architectural feasibility and PPA tradeoffs.
- Drive IO/Core block implementation: synthesis, floorplanning, bus/pin planning, place & route.
- Design and optimize power/clock distribution networks; perform congestion analysis and timing closure.
- Perform STA, IR drop analysis, physical verification, ECOs, and sign-off.
- Develop and maintain physical design methodologies and flows.
- Evaluate third-party IP and provide integration recommendations.
- Work cross-functionally with RF/analog/mixed-signal teams, RTL/arch groups, and multi-site teams.
- Collaborate and mentor other physical design engineers in a start-up-like team environment.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, experience, and compliance requirements; preferred skills listed separately.
- 7+ years of hands-on ASIC implementation experience including synthesis, STA, DFT, and P&R for deep sub-micron nodes.
- Proven experience in timing closure, congestion management, IR drop analysis, physical verification, ECO, and sign-off.
- Practical experience working with RTL/logic designers and system-level teams to meet chip requirements.
- Experience evaluating and integrating 3rd-party IP into physical top flows.
- Authorization to work in the United States is required due to export control laws (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident/Green Card holder, refugee, or asylee).
- Nice to have: experience integrating RF/analog/mixed-signal blocks with digital top flows.
- Nice to have: familiarity with UPF low-power design flows and multi-site/multi-team development environments.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical field; Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field is preferred. Equivalent practical experience may be accepted.
