Sr Photonics Engineer (PIC)

Role Summary

The Senior Photonics Engineer will design and execute experiments to characterize and improve photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and related subsystems, and drive PIC designs from prototype into product. This role partners with hardware and software teams to optimize system-level performance for navigation products.

Experience Level

Senior — requires industry experience; the posting requests at least 2+ years of relevant integrated optics experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include characterization, experiment design, and cross-functional integration of photonic systems.

• Design and execute experimental test plans based on a deep understanding of the optical system.
• Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data; recommend next steps and design changes.
• Identify photonic design changes to improve system-level performance and reliability.
• Collaborate with software and hardware engineering for tighter system integration.
• Contribute to photonic tapeouts via architecture changes, design-for-test, component simulation, and layout input.
• Support optical packaging efforts, coordinating with external vendors and internal teams.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience.

• 2+ years industry experience in integrated optics or equivalent applied experience.
• Hands-on experience in an optoelectronics laboratory performing component- or system-level bench testing.
• Familiarity with optical sources, fiber optics, detectors, and relevant test equipment.
• Proven track record of moving integrated optical systems from prototype to product.
• Strong problem-solving skills for complex optical systems and systems-level thinking.
• Experience designing experiments, automating data collection/analysis, and applying statistics to experimental data.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, innovation-driven environment.
• Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Nice-to-have:

• Background in silicon photonics or optical interferometric sensors (e.g., gyroscopes).
• Experience with inertial measurement systems, optical design simulation tools (COMSOL, Lumerical), PIC layout generation, or PIC packaging.

Education Requirements

MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering field. (The posting specifies MS or PhD; equivalent practical experience may be considered.)
