Job Title
Sr FPGA Engineer
Role Summary
Design, test, and integrate FPGA-based digital signal processing and control algorithms for RF transmitter systems. Work on hardware prototypes and production circuit card assemblies and collaborate with hardware and software engineers across development and installation phases.
Company background: Continental Electronics Corporation supplies RF technologies and transmitter systems for commercial, military, and research customers.
Experience Level
Senior — 8+ years of relevant FPGA/DSP experience (as stated in the posting).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include designing FPGA-based DSP systems and supporting hardware integration, verification, and documentation.
- Define and document functional and system-level requirements for FPGA implementations.
- Design, simulate, implement and verify FPGA-based DSP algorithms (e.g., baseband processing).
- Design FPGA-based circuit card assemblies and develop hardware prototypes.
- Debug and test hardware using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, logic analyzers, etc.
- Define and coordinate software tasks for hardware–software interfaces (Linux host / PCIe endpoint interaction).
- Implement high-speed memory and bus interfaces such as PCIe and DDR3.
- Create reusable circuit designs and develop test fixtures and test plans for chip- and board-level verification.
- Collaborate with project teams, management, and customers; participate in occasional travel as required.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience required for day one success; nice-to-have items are listed separately.
-
Must-have: 8+ years of FPGA/DSP design experience focused on real-time implementation for RF applications.
- Proficiency with Xilinx FPGA design flows (ISE and Vivado); VHDL design entry is essential.
- Experience with full FPGA design flow including simulation, synthesis, implementation, and timing closure.
- Recent experience with Xilinx 7-series devices.
- Expertise in DSP implementations: decimation/interpolation filters, fractional delay filters, asynchronous sample rate conversion, NCO, Hilbert transforms, FFT, waveform generation.
- Experience with FPGA interfaces to A/D and D/A converters and RF sampling/waveform generation.
- Experience with version control and collaborative development practices.
- Familiarity with high-speed PCB layout considerations and designing FPGA-based circuit card assemblies.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
-
Nice-to-have: MATLAB/Simulink modeling experience, high-level programming in C, familiarity with IEEE-1588 time synchronization, RF system design for high-power or high-speed transmissions, FMC module interfacing to FPGA carrier cards.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (BS or MS in Electrical Engineering) is specified; the posting requires 8+ years of relevant experience. The posting also requires the ability to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
