Sr. Engineer, Device Engineering (New College Graduate)

Role Summary

Develop hybrid silicon photonic devices for high-speed optical interconnect and sensing targeting 45 nm processes and beyond. Collaborate with device design, process/integration, and test teams to take concepts from modeling through fabrication and laboratory characterization at Fab8 Malta.

Experience Level

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include device feasibility studies, modeling, design, fabrication support, and experimental characterization.

  • Conduct feasibility studies and benchmark silicon photonic device architectures against existing solutions.
  • Perform theoretical studies and multi-physics modeling of device performance.
  • Design silicon photonic devices for integration in 45nm and advanced processes.
  • Work closely with process and integration engineering teams during device fabrication at Fab8 Malta.
  • Develop measurement methodology, apparatus, and test plans for fabricated devices.
  • Perform experiments to demonstrate device capability for target applications.
  • Adhere to Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements in all activities.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and role constraints; preferred items listed separately.

  • Background in photonics, photonic device physics, CMOS device physics, semiconductor processing, and photonic device characterization.
  • Strong data analysis skills and experience automating data-analysis workflows.
  • Experience with opto-electronic test and measurement tools and test automation.
  • Effective oral and written communication; ability to work in interdisciplinary and global teams.
  • Ability to relocate to Malta, NY (onsite role at Fab8 Malta).

Nice-to-have

  • Experience with diode lasers, modulators, photodetectors, and passive optical devices.
  • Experience with feedback control for lasers and optical systems.
  • Strong presentation and technical writing skills; self-starter with results orientation.

Education Requirements

Master's degree or PhD in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Solid State Physics, or a related engineering/physical science discipline. The posting specifies ~2–3 years of relevant experience alongside these degrees.
