Role Summary

PhD intern on the TCAD Software Development team within Intel Foundry, developing computational software for semiconductor process simulation and design. Work spans computational geometry, scientific computing, visualization, CAD workflows, and high-performance computing.

The role involves prototyping, implementing, and optimizing software features while collaborating with engineers and domain researchers to deliver scalable, maintainable tools for technology development.

Experience Level

Entry-level intern (PhD student). Posting requests a minimum of 3 months of relevant educational, research, laboratory, internship, or industry experience and 3+ months of experience in related technical areas.

Responsibilities

Contribute to research-oriented software development and engineering tasks supporting TCAD and semiconductor technology work.

• Design, implement, and optimize software features for research and engineering applications.
• Participate in architecture, prototyping, testing, and performance tuning.
• Develop computational geometry algorithms and scientific visualization tools (2D/3D).
• Implement numerical methods and simulation capabilities (e.g., FEM, level set techniques).
• Perform development, debugging, and performance analysis on Linux platforms.
• Document technical work and present results to project stakeholders.
• Collaborate with software engineers, researchers, and domain experts to integrate solutions.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and practical experience for the internship.

• Hands-on experience with Python and/or C++ development.
• Experience in one or more of: computational geometry, scientific visualization, CAD tool development, or optimization algorithms (3+ months).
• Development and debugging experience in Linux environments; performance analysis skills.
• Strong analytical and software engineering fundamentals; ability to deliver maintainable code.

Nice-to-have:

• Algorithm design and implementation for 2D/3D geometry and mesh generation (Delaunay, quad/hex meshing).
• Computer graphics or visualization experience (OpenGL, ray tracing) and UI/Qt development.
• Numerical methods knowledge (FEM, level set) and parallel/HPC programming experience.
• Experience with CAD geometry representation, voxel processing, and scalable scientific software.

Education Requirements

Enrollment in a PhD program is required: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or closely related technical fields. Strong academic record preferred (cumulative GPA ~3.0 or higher).
