Software Engineering Manager, AI Kernels & Performance Optimization (MTIA Software)
Meta PlatformsJob Title
Software Engineering Manager, AI Kernels & Performance Optimization (MTIA Software)
Role Summary
Lead a team building high-performance compute and communication kernels and performance tooling for Meta's in-house MTIA AI accelerators. The team spans kernel development, runtime/compiler interactions, and hardware/software co-design to achieve roofline-level performance for large-scale AI workloads.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role responsible for technical strategy, cross-functional collaboration with silicon architects, and delivering measurable performance outcomes at production scale.
Experience Level
Senior - manager-level role. Typical guidance: 4+ years of software engineering experience with systems-level or platform focus and 2+ years managing engineering teams.
Responsibilities
The manager will set technical direction, unblock and grow engineers, and drive cross-functional delivery of kernel and performance work.
- Lead and manage a team of systems/kernel engineers across multiple projects and ambiguous, high-impact problems.
- Define and drive technical roadmaps and measurable outcomes for kernel and performance efforts.
- Contribute hands-on to architecture reviews, design documents, and production code as needed.
- Oversee profiling and root-cause performance analysis across instruction scheduling, memory hierarchies, on-chip interconnect, and collectives.
- Partner with silicon architects to quantify hardware feature value and influence hardware/software co-design.
- Manage engineering efficiency issues including on-call load, technical debt, and tooling gaps.
- Recruit, onboard, and develop engineers; set goals and provide feedback to grow team capability.
- Communicate technical decisions, progress, and trade-offs to cross-functional partners and leadership.
Requirements
Key qualifications required to perform the role and preferred skills that improve fit.
- Must-have: 4+ years in software engineering focused on systems-level software, platform infrastructure, or distributed systems.
- Must-have: 2+ years managing or leading engineering teams, including setting technical direction and supporting engineer growth.
- Must-have: Experience driving technical roadmaps and delivering measurable outcomes in ambiguous, high-complexity environments.
- Must-have: Experience identifying and resolving engineering efficiency problems (on-call burden, technical debt, automation gaps).
- Must-have: Experience collaborating with product, design, and data teams to deliver software with business impact.
- Nice-to-have: Hands-on kernel development and prior manager contributions to design docs or production code.
- Nice-to-have: Hardware/software co-design experience with AI accelerators and validating architectural features using real kernels.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with transformer/attention kernel design, distributed execution and collectives, and pre-silicon bring-up or first-light optimization.
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with kernel libraries or frameworks (CUTLASS, Triton, cuBLAS/cuDNN, oneDNN, etc.), compiler/codegen tools (MLIR, LLVM, XLA, TVM), and low-precision numerics/quantization.
Education Requirements
