Software Engineer - Linux BSP & Driver Development (Campus 2027)

Role Summary

Develop and maintain Linux board support packages (BSP) and device drivers for i.MX SoC platforms. Work with hardware teams to perform SOC bring-up, kernel maintenance, and upstream contributions to the Linux community.

Position sits within the embedded software organization supporting SOC validation, kernel-level feature development, and hard‑real‑time/peripheral integration.

Experience Level

Entry-level / Campus role targeting graduating class of 2027. Suitable for new graduates or candidates with academic projects or internship experience in embedded systems (approximately 0–2 years relevant experience).

Responsibilities

Primary duties involve low-level kernel work, hardware bring-up, and kernel maintenance.

• Design, implement, and debug Linux kernel device drivers and BSP components for i.MX SoC peripherals.
• Collaborate with hardware engineering teams for initial software and board bring-up of new SOCs.
• Maintain, patch, and upgrade the Linux kernel to add features, fix bugs, and address security vulnerabilities.
• Engage with the upstream Linux community to submit and shepherd patches.
• Use kernel debugging and analysis tools (gdb, kdb, ftrace, dmesg) to diagnose performance, memory leaks, and stability issues.

Requirements

Technical must-haves and preferred skills.

Must-have:

• Proficiency in Embedded C and a solid understanding of data structures and low-level programming.
• Strong theoretical knowledge of operating system concepts: memory management, concurrency, scheduling, and interrupts; academic or project experience with Linux architecture.
• Basic familiarity with ARM architecture (preferably Cortex-A) and ability to read hardware schematics and component datasheets.
• Ability to use kernel debugging tools and follow standard developer workflows.

Nice-to-have:

• Hands-on experience with i.MX or other ARM development boards (academic or personal projects).
• Experience with open-source/upstream Linux development.
• Familiarity with Git and shell scripting.
• Experience using AI coding assistants for coding, debugging, or automation.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field. Role targets graduating class of 2027 (campus/new graduate).
