Silicon Photonics Reliability Engineering Intern (Summer 2027)
Role Summary
Internship position supporting reliability development and qualification for silicon photonics and CMOS devices. The intern will work with reliability engineers and cross-functional teams to execute tests, analyze data, study failure mechanisms, and contribute to qualification activities for photonic components such as waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, and lasers.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for students (sophomore or above). No prior years-of-professional-experience required; suitable for current undergraduates or graduate students.
Responsibilities
Work under guidance of experienced engineers to support reliability and qualification tasks.
- Assist in design and evaluation of reliability test structures for CMOS and photonic devices.
- Support execution of reliability stress tests, laboratory measurements, and device characterization.
- Collect, organize, validate, and analyze reliability data; summarize trends and present findings.
- Contribute to development of reliability models, statistical analyses, and lifetime projections.
- Perform literature reviews on degradation mechanisms, failure modes, and industry standards.
- Investigate device reliability concerns and failure mechanisms for waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, and lasers.
- Support hardware planning, test readiness, and lab activities to meet project schedules.
- Document experimental methods and results; prepare technical reports and presentations.
- Follow Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements in lab activities.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and eligibility criteria for successful internship performance.
- Availability to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship.
- English fluency (written and verbal).
- Basic understanding of semiconductor device physics and interest in photonics.
- Ability to analyze technical data, solve engineering problems, and work collaboratively.
- Experience or comfort with data analysis and documenting experimental work.
Nice-to-have:
- Prior related internship or co-op experience; leadership experience in projects or competitions.
- Coursework or research in silicon photonics, optoelectronics, semiconductor devices, materials science, or reliability engineering.
- Familiarity with lab measurements and data analysis tools (Python, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab, Excel).
- Understanding of basic statistics and reliability concepts; familiarity with photonic devices and optical communications.
- Interest in leveraging AI tools to improve productivity and workflows.
Education Requirements
At least a sophomore at time of application and actively pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Photonics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Applied Physics, Semiconductor Engineering, or a related field through an accredited degree program. Must have at least an overall 3.0 GPA and be in good academic standing.
