Silicon Photonics Quality & Reliability Engineer
Role Summary
Support reliability assessments, qualification activities, and technology development for silicon photonic devices and photonic integrated circuits within Intel's Silicon Photonics Quality & Reliability team. Collaborate with process integration, design, manufacturing, and quality teams to evaluate device reliability, analyze data, investigate failures, and develop robust qualification methodologies.
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on device characterization, qualification testing, failure analysis, and transferring technologies into manufacturing.
Experience Level
Entry-level - requires approximately 1+ years of relevant experience (Master's with 1+ years or PhD with ~6 months, per the posting).
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include reliability characterization, data analysis, qualification testing, and supporting technology transfer.
- Support reliability characterization and qualification activities for silicon photonic devices and photonic integrated circuits (PICs).
- Analyze reliability, characterization, and manufacturing data to identify trends, opportunities, and risks.
- Design and execute experiments (DOE) and perform statistical analyses to evaluate device performance and reliability.
- Partner with cross-functional teams on technology development and process certification activities.
- Perform root-cause investigations and failure analysis using structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Support environmental, electrical, and reliability stress testing and qualification efforts.
- Prepare technical reports and communicate findings to engineering teams.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support transfer of new technologies into manufacturing.
Requirements
Required technical skills and experience are listed below; preferred skills follow.
Must-have
- Hands-on silicon photonics technology or manufacturing experience.
- Data extraction and analysis skills (examples: JMP, ILM, REL, PCS, SQL scripting).
- QnR/process/device/product engineering experience and familiarity with manufacturing data.
- Ability to design experiments, perform statistical analysis, and use data to drive engineering decisions.
- Experience supporting or conducting failure analysis and root-cause investigations.
- Strong verbal and written communication and ability to work in cross-functional teams.
Preferred
- Familiarity with SPC/DOE principles and structured problem solving.
- Exposure to qualification methodologies and test methods for optical devices (HTOL, THB/DH, MSV, TC, HTS, ESD).
- Experience with device/semiconductor physics and electrical characterization techniques relevant to wafer fabrication.
Education Requirements
Master's degree in Optical Science, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Semiconductor Engineering, or a related technical field with 1+ years of relevant experience; or a PhD in one of these fields with approximately 6 months of relevant experience.
