Job Title

Silicon Photonic Engineer

Role Summary

Lead the development and delivery of packaged silicon photonics and optical interconnect products. Translate customer needs into technical requirements and drive cross-functional execution from concept through validation, working with customers, foundries, suppliers, contract manufacturers, and internal teams.

Experience Level

Mid-Career technical role with leadership responsibilities. The posting describes a technical leadership position but does not specify years of experience.

Responsibilities

Accountable for product definition, cross-functional coordination, technical execution, and validation of packaged silicon photonics solutions.

  • Define product requirements for next-generation optical interconnects balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, power, and schedule.
  • Serve as primary technical interface to customers, foundries, suppliers, and contract manufacturers.
  • Lead alignment across hardware, firmware, software, validation, and manufacturing teams, tracking milestones and trade-offs.
  • Perform optical link analysis using simulation and modeling to assess impairments and system-level performance.
  • Drive packaged optics development including assembly tolerances, fiber attach, thermal constraints, reliability, and scale-up readiness.
  • Define test strategies and plans (EVT, DVT, SVT); select equipment and perform hands-on lab validation.
  • Translate system-level goals into actionable requirements for silicon photonics, electronics, firmware, and manufacturing partners.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience required to perform the role; preferred items listed separately.

  • Proven experience in a technical leadership role delivering photonics-based products.
  • Deep expertise in silicon photonics design, performance characteristics, and trade-offs.
  • Direct experience with packaged silicon photonics or optical engine development, including integration and manufacturing considerations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform optical link budget analysis using simulation and modeling.
  • Experience defining product requirements and driving execution across hardware, firmware, software, validation, and manufacturing teams.
  • Experience defining test plans and test methodologies for optical systems (EVT, DVT, SVT) and hands-on lab validation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced startup environment and lead cross-functional teams.

Preferred:

  • Experience with test automation frameworks and scripting (e.g., Python).
  • Direct experience with hyperscale data center customers or suppliers on packaged/co-packaged optics or optical I/O.
  • Experience with fiber attach technologies, optical assembly processes, and package-level integration challenges.

Education Requirements

Not specified.
