Shift Process Engineer
LumentumJob Title
Shift Process Engineer
Role Summary
Provide hands-on engineering support for semiconductor fabrication and backend manufacturing at the Caswell site, working on a rotating 12-hour shift pattern (24x7 operation: 2 days, 2 nights, 4 days off). The role interfaces with Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Product Engineering, Quality and R&D to maintain safe, stable and efficient production and support new product introductions.
Experience Level
Mid-level. No explicit years of experience stated; the role expects practical engineering experience in semiconductor or advanced manufacturing environments.
Responsibilities
Provide engineering support on shift to maintain process control, recover production, and improve manufacturing performance.
- Provide shift-based process engineering support across fabrication and backend operations.
- Serve as engineering point of contact for Manufacturing on process, product and equipment issues.
- Monitor process and product performance using SPC, MES and other manufacturing data systems; respond to abnormal conditions.
- Investigate manufacturing excursions using structured problem-solving and root-cause analysis; implement containment, recovery and corrective actions.
- Maintain and improve production processes to enhance capability, yield, quality, throughput, cycle time and cost.
- Support development, qualification and introduction of new or modified manufacturing processes and products.
- Apply SPC, DOE, Six Sigma, Lean and statistical methods to process-improvement activities.
- Identify recurring issues and escalate significant or unresolved problems to process owners or engineering teams.
- Prepare and maintain operating procedures, engineering reports, process specifications and training materials.
- Mentor Manufacturing personnel and ensure adherence to process controls, quality requirements and procedures.
- Work safely in semiconductor cleanroom and manufacturing environments and comply with site HSE requirements.
Requirements
Core technical and professional qualifications expected for the role.
- Practical technical knowledge of one or more semiconductor manufacturing technologies (lithography, etch, thin-film deposition, metallisation, backend wafer processing).
- Experience working in semiconductor, photonics, compound semiconductor, MEMS, optoelectronics, silicon photonics or other advanced manufacturing environments (listed as highly desirable).
- Familiarity with SPC, DOE, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing and structured root-cause-analysis methodologies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to interpret process, equipment and product data.
- Ability to troubleshoot and prioritise manufacturing issues in a fast-paced production environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective interaction between Manufacturing and Engineering teams.
- Competent user of Microsoft Office, manufacturing execution systems (MES) and data-analysis applications.
- Ability to work the required shift pattern and provide additional support when needed.
- Attention to detail, dependable, good attendance and timekeeping.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Semiconductor Technology, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industrial experience.
