Senior Validation Engineer, Electro-Optical Devices
PsiQuantumJob Title
Senior Validation Engineer, Electro-Optical Devices
Role Summary
The Senior Validation Engineer develops and implements validation methods for electro-optical subsystems, drives measurements in the engineering environment, debugs issues, and supports larger-quantity manufacturing builds.
The role works across optics, electronics, firmware, software, thermal design, and operations to characterize performance, improve yield, and deliver actionable reports to design and process engineers.
Experience Level
Senior level. The position requires 8+ years of industry experience validating and testing optical systems.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include planning and executing validation campaigns and supervising measurement activities.
- Review electro-optical system designs and integrations (PCBA, optical assemblies, firmware/software, thermal).
- Identify key performance parameters and appropriate measurement methods with design teams.
- Write complete validation and characterization plans and estimate time/throughput for large-quantity testing.
- Design and run experiments and lab setups using light sources, detectors, switches, function generators, oscilloscopes, etc.
- Develop scripts and algorithms to automate data collection, analysis, and extraction of performance metrics.
- Own validation execution: supervise measurements, produce reports and yield indications, identify issues, and support root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with operations and manufacturing to review build data, monitor yields, and recommend mitigations.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and methods; preferred items noted.
- Hands-on experience with optical and electrical test equipment: power meters, optical backscatter reflectometers (OBR), optical spectrum analyzers (OSA), oscilloscopes, function generators (AWG), and vector network analyzers (VNA).
- Experience with high-speed electro-optical devices and test tools: electro-optical modulators, RF detectors, pulsed lasers, and optical sampling oscilloscopes.
- Proven experience developing test methods, tuning/calibration algorithms, and optimization strategies.
- Ability to write scripts to control instruments and automate data acquisition and analysis.
- Experience with EDVT and Fast Fail methodology.
- Preferred: Python programming experience for test automation and data analysis.
- Plus: familiarity programming CPUs to interface with FPGAs is beneficial.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or a physical science and 8+ years of industry experience relevant to validating and testing optical systems.
