Senior Technical Staff Engineer - Software
Role Summary
Senior embedded systems software engineer responsible for platform and technology building blocks for Microchip's network timing and synchronization products. The role focuses on embedded Linux, bootloaders, kernel drivers, and board bring-up for ARM-based systems.
Member of a cross-functional development team based in Santa Rosa or San Jose, CA; expected travel 0–25% to support hardware bring-up and collaboration.

Responsibilities
Design, implement, and validate low-level software and drivers to support new hardware platforms and features.
- Develop and optimize embedded Linux-based software for scalable devices and systems.
- Customize and maintain U-Boot bootloader and perform Linux kernel porting across platforms.
- Design and deliver Linux kernel drivers for peripherals and custom Ethernet drivers.
- Perform board bring-up and validate hardware-software integration on ARM-based systems.
- Troubleshoot complex issues using debugging tools and work with QA, hardware engineering, and global development teams to drive resolution.
- Produce design documentation and functional specifications for new software modules.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for immediate contribution.
Must-have:
- Extensive experience with Linux kernel internals and peripheral driver development (Ethernet, Flash, SPI, I2C, UART).
- Proven experience customizing U-Boot and porting the Linux kernel for embedded platforms.
- Board bring-up experience on ARM-based systems.
- Strong networking/IP protocol knowledge and experience with IPv4/IPv6, VLANs, routing, and firewall concepts.
- Proficiency in C and shell scripting; strong debugging skills with GDB and Lauterbach.
- Experience with Yocto or similar embedded build systems.
- Ability to prepare design/specification documents and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- U.S. export control requirement: candidate must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or a protected individual as defined in 8 USC 1324b(a)(3).
Nice-to-have:
- Familiarity with NXP QorIQ Layerscape processors.
- Experience with PCI Express controllers and bus specifications.
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical field is specified. The posting also specifies a minimum of 15 years of experience developing embedded platform software.
