Senior Systems Software Engineer
ZooJob Title
Senior Systems Software Engineer
Role Summary
Owner of reliability, automation, and evolution for core platform systems. Work spans backend, infrastructure, and system-level engineering to ensure the platform is performant, scalable, and maintainable.
Collaborate with engineering teams to build tooling, integrations, and operational automation; step into frontend work when necessary to resolve system-level issues.
Experience Level
Senior-level. No specific years-of-experience requirement stated in the posting.
Responsibilities
Provide technical ownership of systems, tooling, and infrastructure that support the platform.
- Design, implement, and maintain core systems and services for reliability, performance, and scalability.
- Build automation and developer tooling to reduce operational overhead and enforce consistency.
- Develop integrations with external platforms (billing, CRM, authentication, analytics).
- Improve observability, monitoring, and alerting across services.
- Architect and maintain infrastructure components (distributed services, data pipelines, deployment automation).
- Contribute to security-related systems such as permissions, access flows, and auditability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across backend, infrastructure, and occasionally frontend layers.
- Occasionally modify frontend code to close the loop on system-level changes or unblock reliability issues.
Requirements
Key technical skills and must-have experience for success in this role.
- Strong professional experience in systems, platform, or infrastructure engineering.
- Proficiency in Rust and systems-level programming.
- Experience with databases (transactional and analytical): schema design, performance tuning, migrations, and operational reliability.
- Strong understanding of API design, data flows, and service integrations.
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems or service-oriented architectures.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code and containerized deployment workflows.
- Ability to work autonomously and make high-leverage technical decisions in a fast-moving environment.
- Bias toward automation and building tools to remove operational friction.
Nice-to-have:
- Frontend experience (JavaScript/React) for occasional UI fixes.
- Experience with billing systems (Stripe) or CRM platforms.
- Background building internal tooling, permissions systems, or developer productivity infrastructure.
- Familiarity with CAD-adjacent workflows or domain-specific data pipelines.
Education Requirements
B.S. in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
