Job Title

Senior Staff Testing Engineer

Role Summary

Senior test development engineer in Operations responsible for defining test strategy and building automated, high-throughput test systems for silicon photonics devices. Work closely with design, manufacturing partners, and test vendors to validate electro-optic performance and improve yield.

Experience Level

Senior-level. Requires 8+ years of hands-on experience in silicon photonics design, characterization, or production testing.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include architecting test approaches, developing automation, and leading characterization and yield-improvement efforts.

  • Define wafer-level and die/module-level test strategy, roadmap, and architecture for silicon photonics devices.
  • Design, build, and optimize automated optical testbeds integrating alignment systems, tunable lasers, OSAs, and RF instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with SiPh design and layout teams to implement Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) features.
  • Lead electro-optic characterization (insertion loss, PDL, responsivity, S-parameters, eye diagrams, BER).
  • Develop data pipelines and use statistical process control to identify yield detractors and root causes.
  • Partner with OSATs, foundries, and test-equipment vendors to integrate custom probers and production-line test setups.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, practical experience, and eligibility requirements.

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in silicon photonics testing, characterization, or production.
  • Deep knowledge of integrated optics and common components (grating/edge couplers, microrings, MZMs, photodetectors).
  • Proficient in automation and instrument control using Python, LabVIEW, or C/C++ for hardware synchronization and data acquisition.
  • Extensive experience with high-speed optical and RF test equipment (LCAs, sampling scopes, optical switches, precision alignment stages).
  • Strong statistical and data-analysis skills with tools such as JMP, MATLAB, Pandas/NumPy, or SQL to handle large wafer/die datasets.
  • Experience working with external manufacturing partners and vendors to deploy production test solutions.
  • Ability to work within export-control constraints; candidates must be eligible to access export-controlled technology as required by law.

Education Requirements

Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or a closely related field.
