Job Title
Senior Staff Software Engineer - PHY Layer Concepts / Validation Infrastructure
Role Summary
Senior software engineering role on Marvell Central Engineering's Central System Engineering (CSE) team within the Central IP applications group. Responsible for designing and implementing a PHY validation framework and related automation to validate high-speed PHY IPs (SERDES, USB, PCIe, Ethernet) in lab environments and support SoC production.
The role focuses on building scalable, automated validation infrastructure, integrating hardware and test equipment, and collaborating with hardware, firmware, and test teams to ensure reliable, repeatable validation workflows.
Experience Level
Senior. Typical experience expectation: 8+ years of software engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 5+ years with a Master's degree.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include building and maintaining validation infrastructure, automating test workflows, and collaborating across functions.
- Design and implement PHY validation framework emphasizing automation, scalability, and modularity.
- Develop test infrastructure, automation tools, and CI/CD pipelines for continuous integration and reporting.
- Integrate DUTs, measurement instruments, data acquisition systems, and test control platforms into the framework.
- Collaborate with hardware, firmware, validation, and test engineering to define validation goals and interfaces.
- Monitor system performance and test coverage; optimize runtime efficiency and failure diagnostics.
- Document framework architecture, test flows, and onboarding materials for engineers.
- Maintain framework via version control, issue tracking, modular code practices, and code reviews.
- Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices in software engineering and validation methodology.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for successful performance in this role.
- Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (C++, C#, Python, or similar) and strong software design principles.
- Experience designing and implementing automation frameworks or validation infrastructure.
- Familiarity with PHY layer concepts and validation workflows (SERDES, USB, PCIe, Ethernet).
- Experience with version control (Git), CI/CD workflows, and issue tracking systems (e.g., Jira).
- Hands-on experience with test equipment (oscilloscopes, BERTs, logic analyzers) and integrating instruments via APIs (SCPI, VISA, gRPC).
- Strong debugging, problem-solving, and analytical skills in hardware-software environments.
- Effective communication and ability to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience developing test automation systems in lab automation or hardware validation environments.
- Knowledge of data analysis tools (Pandas, NumPy, MATLAB) and processing large test datasets.
- Familiarity with hardware bring-up, signal integrity, or post-silicon validation processes.
- Contributions to coding standards, automation best practices, or system design documentation.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with 8+ years of software engineering experience; OR a Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with 5+ years of software engineering experience.
