Job Title
Senior Staff Optical Engineer
Role Summary
The Senior Staff Optical Engineer will develop and validate high-speed optical interconnect systems used in data center, cloud and carrier applications. The role sits in the Optical Connectivity Group and focuses on system-level modeling, simulation, lab characterization, and design validation of optical transceivers and associated electrical/optical channels.
Experience Level
Senior-level (senior/staff). See Education Requirements for specific years-of-experience guidance associated with degree levels.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities cover system simulation, lab validation, and troubleshooting of high-speed optical links.
- Perform end-to-end system and channel simulations covering SerDes, electrical and optical channels, packages, and transceivers.
- Develop, maintain, and extend system-level simulation environments and models.
- Conduct laboratory measurements and correlate results with simulations for system validation and optimization.
- Analyze and resolve signal integrity issues (crosstalk, attenuation, reflections, discontinuities) in high-speed designs.
- Execute engineering validation tests (EVT) and design validation tests (DVT) for optical communication products.
Requirements
Key technical skills and experience required for successful performance in this role.
- Deep knowledge of optical communication components and subsystems: optical DSPs (including coherent DSP), modulators, receivers, TIAs, and RF amplifiers.
- Expertise in optical link impairments and compensation techniques, and signal integrity across the data path.
- Solid fundamentals in RF/microwave engineering and photonics.
- Proficient programming in Python for data analysis and automation.
- Experience with system or channel simulation tools such as Keysight ADS (including IBIS-AMI) or MATLAB.
- Experience in signal processing and analysis for data communications (PAM4, equalization, DSP techniques).
- Hands-on experience with electrical and optical test equipment: optical spectrum analyzers, digital communication analyzers, high-speed oscilloscopes, wavelength and power meters.
- Familiarity with signal integrity measurement tools and techniques including VNA and TDR.
Education Requirements
PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field with 3+ years of relevant experience; OR Master’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience; OR Bachelor’s degree with 5–10 years of relevant experience in design validation and modeling for fiber-optical communication systems. (Degree and years guidance specified in the source posting.)
