Job Title

Senior Staff Firmware Engineer — High-Speed Optical Components

Role Summary

Design, verify, validate and integrate embedded firmware for high-speed optical components including silicon photonics, transmit/receive amplifiers, controller ASICs and associated control loops. The role participates across the full product lifecycle from architecture and bring-up through NPI and system-level validation.

Work is performed on a cross-functional firmware team collaborating with hardware and software engineers to deliver reliable, high-performance embedded firmware for production products. Reasonable accommodation requests during the selection process: contact Marvell HR Helpdesk at TAOps@marvell.com.

Experience Level

Senior-level. The posting specifies degree-based experience ranges (Bachelor’s +3–5 years or Master’s +2–3 years); the title indicates a senior role.

Responsibilities

Deliver embedded firmware across design, test, and production activities; lead firmware bring-up and validation for next-generation products.

  • Design, implement, test, release and maintain embedded firmware for component platforms.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams on system requirements, schematics and validation plans.
  • Optimize firmware for performance, reliability and power consumption.
  • Participate in design and code reviews; debug complex hardware/firmware interactions.
  • Lead system bring-up and NPI activities for new products.
  • Develop and maintain functional specs, design documents and test specifications.
  • Create unit test processes and execute frequent internal and customer firmware releases.
  • Perform system-level testing and validate control loops and firmware under varied operating conditions.

Requirements

Core technical skills and practical embedded experience required. Travel approx. 20%.

Must-have:

  • Experience with microprocessor architectures (at least ARM or RISC-V).
  • RTOS concepts: queuing, memory management and interrupt processing.
  • Embedded device driver experience with communication protocols (SPI, I2C, MDIO, UART).
  • Experience writing control firmware for CDR, Flash/EEPROM, laser drivers and TEC controllers.
  • Expert-level C and Python programming skills.
  • Hands-on hardware debug using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG and similar tools.
  • Working knowledge of hardware design schematics and version control/build systems (e.g., git, IDE, gmake).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with distributed teams; excellent multitasking.
  • Willingness to travel up to ~20%.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with silicon photonics or high-speed optical transceivers.
  • Familiarity with parameter calibration techniques (interpolation, splines) and firmware control loops.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related technical field (posting specifies Bachelor's +3–5 years of related experience), or a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field (posting specifies Master’s +2–3 years of related experience). No other formal certifications were specified.
