Job Title

Senior Specialist, FPGA Engineer

Role Summary

Design and develop FPGA-based and microcontroller-based electronics for Electronic Safe and Arm Devices (fuzes) used in defense systems. Work within a hardware engineering team to define architecture, implement logic and firmware, and validate designs to meet performance and safety requirements.

Primary focus areas include Verilog FPGA design, SystemVerilog UVM verification, embedded C development, and debugging on target hardware.

Experience Level

Senior - expects experienced engineers with substantial embedded hardware/FPGA design background (senior-level responsibilities).

Responsibilities

Deliver and validate FPGA and associated hardware/firmware from requirements through production support.

  • Define architecture and implement FPGA logic and microcontroller firmware for Electronic Safe and Arm Devices.
  • Develop Verilog HDL targeting antifuse and enhanced flash FPGAs.
  • Create and execute verification plans, including SystemVerilog UVM-based verification where applicable.
  • Debug hardware and firmware in lab and target environments; perform performance profiling and functional analysis.
  • Integrate sensor interfaces, A/D and D/A, communication protocols, sequence verification, timer chains, and related subsystems.
  • Support code reviews, unit testing, prototyping, and product testing; contribute to process and quality improvements.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; degree and minimum years guidance are in Education Requirements below.

  • Strong Verilog HDL experience for logic design and digital architecture.
  • Embedded C programming experience for microcontrollers, including algorithm development and optimized code.
  • Hands-on experience with lab tools: logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, JTAG/ICE debuggers, and protocol analyzers.
  • Experience targeting antifuse and enhanced flash FPGA families (Microsemi/Actel preferred).
  • Familiarity with digital design practices: design verification, code reviews, unit testing, and prototyping.
  • Experience with version control systems such as SVN, Git, or TFS.
  • Ability to analyze and debug integrated hardware/firmware issues and profile system performance.
  • Nice-to-have: SystemVerilog verification (AVM/VMM/OVM/UVM), QuestaSim, C# for microcontroller development, and prior experience with sensor interfaces, A/D-D/A, and communication protocols.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree (field not specified) plus minimum 6 years related experience; OR graduate degree plus minimum 4 years related experience; OR without a degree, minimum 10 years related experience. Specific fields of study were not listed.
