Senior Quantum Measurement Engineer
MicrosoftJob Title
Senior Quantum Measurement Engineer
Role Summary
Measure, operate, and improve integrated quantum systems that combine topological qubits with supporting hardware. Lead experimental campaigns to demonstrate system capabilities and identify performance limitations while working in an interdisciplinary team of materials, fabrication, microwave, and systems engineers in Redmond, WA.
Experience Level
Senior. Typical experience guidance from the posting: equivalent to 6+ years industry experience with a Bachelor's, 4+ years with a Master's, or 1+ year with a PhD; alternative combinations of degree and experience or equivalent practical experience are acceptable.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include designing and running experiments on hybrid semiconductor–superconductor devices and integrated quantum systems, analyzing results, and improving measurement infrastructure.
- Design and execute experiments to characterize device and system performance, including cryogenic measurements.
- Extract actionable conclusions from complex, noisy data and present results to stakeholders.
- Collaborate with materials, nanofabrication, microwave, and systems teams to optimize performance.
- Develop and deploy automation and measurement pipelines; apply AI methods where appropriate to accelerate experiments and analysis.
- Operate, debug, and improve complex experimental setups, including cryogenic control and readout systems.
Requirements
Minimum technical and eligibility requirements; degree specifics are summarized separately in Education Requirements.
- Proven experience running experiments on solid-state quantum devices and associated control/readout systems.
- Hands-on experience with cryogenic measurement systems (4 K and colder) and experimental system debugging.
- Experience with data acquisition and programming in high-level languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and version control (e.g., Git).
- Ability to apply and leverage AI tools to accelerate engineering tasks, analysis, and automation.
- Must be able to meet Microsoft and export-control-related security and citizenship/residency screening requirements.
- Preferred: advanced experience (multi-year) running complex experimental campaigns and improving measurement throughput and system integration.
Education Requirements
Posting specifies degree-based paths: Bachelor's in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field (typically with 6+ years' industry or R&D experience); OR Master's in those fields (typically with 4+ years' experience); OR Doctorate in those fields (typically with 1+ years' experience). Preferred/alternative thresholds include Bachelor's +8+ years, Master's +6+ years, or PhD +3+ years. The posting also accepts equivalent practical experience in lieu of formal degrees.
