Senior Process Engineer
LumentumJob Title
Senior Process Engineer
Role Summary
Senior/Principal Process Engineer responsible for technical ownership of die bond / die attach processes for high-precision optical and photonics manufacturing. The role leads process development, qualification, transfer to contract manufacturers, yield improvement, and production ramp.
Works cross-functionally with R&D, Quality, Operations, Supply Chain, equipment suppliers, and Contract Manufacturers to ensure manufacturing readiness and sustained production performance.
Experience Level
Senior / Principal level. Senior: typically 8+ years relevant experience. Principal: typically 10+ years with demonstrated technical leadership and ownership of complex manufacturing processes.
Responsibilities
Own and improve high-precision die bond and die attach processes from development through high-volume production.
- Develop, characterize, optimize, qualify, and sustain die bond/die attach processes; define process windows and acceptance criteria.
- Specify and control key parameters: placement/alignment accuracy, bonding force, temperature/time, bond-line thickness, materials, tooling, and collet design.
- Plan and execute NPI activities: engineering builds, First Article Inspection, process characterization, CM qualification, and manufacturing readiness.
- Transfer products to Contract Manufacturers and support production ramp and sustaining activities.
- Analyze SPC, Cp/Cpk, DOE and other statistical data to drive yield and capability improvements.
- Lead root-cause investigations and implement corrective/preventive actions using structured problem-solving methods (8D, 5-Why, Fishbone, DOE, fault-tree).
- Drive automation, cycle-time reduction, equipment optimization, and cost-reduction programs.
- Lead cross-functional projects, communicate technical risks/status, and mentor junior engineers.
Requirements
Practical manufacturing and process engineering skills specific to optoelectronics and high-precision assembly. Candidates should be able to provide hands-on support and independently resolve complex process and equipment issues.
Must-have:
- Extensive experience with die bond or die attach process development, optimization, and sustaining in precision/optical manufacturing.
- Strong manufacturing engineering experience with optoelectronic devices, optical modules, or precision assembly.
- Experience in New Product Introduction, product qualification, and transferring products into high-volume manufacturing.
- Statistical process control skills: SPC, process capability (Cp/Cpk), DOE, and statistical data analysis.
- Experience working with Contract Manufacturers, equipment suppliers, and cross-functional teams.
- Hands-on troubleshooting of process and equipment issues on the manufacturing floor.
- Good English communication skills (written and verbal) and willingness/ability to travel internationally as required.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with laser die-to-submount assembly and active/passive alignment techniques.
- Familiarity with high-precision die bond platforms (ASM, AMICRA, Silicool, Palomar, or equivalent).
- Experience with process automation, tooling/collet design, and equipment integration.
- Experience in optical communications products, tunable lasers, transceivers, or photonic devices.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, Applied Physics, or a related technical field; or equivalent practical experience. (Senior: typically 8+ years; Principal: typically 10+ years.)
