Senior/Principal Power and Signal Integrity Engineer

Role Summary

Define the electrical architecture for next-generation Cryo-CMOS quantum control systems. Design and analyze power delivery, signal integrity, and electrical isolation across silicon, package, and board-level implementations to enable large-scale quantum control alongside sensitive qubit circuitry.

Individual contributor on the Microsoft Quantum hardware engineering team; role is based in Redmond with a 3 days/week in-office requirement.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

• Define and drive power integrity and signal integrity strategy for Cryo-CMOS quantum control systems.
• Own electrical integrity across silicon, package, PCB, interconnect, and system-level implementations.
• Architect and optimize power delivery networks spanning on-chip power grids, advanced packages, and board-level power distribution.
• Develop isolation strategies allowing large-scale digital switching to coexist with sensitive analog, RF, and qubit-control signals.
• Analyze and mitigate power delivery issues, switching noise, electromagnetic coupling, crosstalk, and mixed-signal interference mechanisms.
• Drive silicon-package-board co-design with ASIC, package, board, system, and quantum hardware teams.
• Establish design methodologies, validation plans, and signoff criteria for power integrity and signal integrity closure.
• Correlate simulation results with laboratory measurements and provide technical leadership for architecture decisions.

Requirements

Must-have and preferred technical skills and other employment requirements.

• Must-have: Demonstrated experience with power integrity and signal integrity for complex mixed-signal electronic systems (PDN architecture, IR drop, voltage droop, simultaneous switching noise, ground bounce, return-current behavior, transmission-line effects).
• Experience designing and analyzing PDNs across ASICs, semiconductor packages, PCBs, and complete electronic systems, including silicon-package-board co-analysis and design optimization.
• Experience correlating simulation results with laboratory characterization and measurement data.
• Familiarity with industry-standard simulation tools (examples: Synopsys RaptorX, Ansys HFSS, Cadence Clarity, PowerSI, Keysight ADS, Spectre, HSPICE) or equivalent environments.
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional hardware programs and collaborate with ASIC, packaging, board, and system teams.
• Must be able to meet Microsoft security and export-control screening requirements, including background check and citizenship/permanent-residency verification as applicable.
• Ability to leverage AI tools to improve modeling, analysis, research, and engineering workflows.
• Nice-to-have: Experience with Cryo-CMOS, cryogenic electronics, superconducting systems, advanced packaging (2.5D/3D, interposers, chiplets), and defining PI signoff methodologies.

Education Requirements

Required/Minimum: Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or related field with ≥1 year industry/R&D experience; OR Master’s in Physics, Engineering, or related field with ≥4 years experience; OR Bachelor’s in Physics, Engineering, or related field with ≥6 years experience; OR equivalent practical experience. Preferred: Doctorate with ≥3 years, Master’s with ≥6 years, or Bachelor’s with ≥8 years. Fields referenced: Physics, Engineering, or related technical fields; equivalent experience accepted.
