Senior Principal Engineer, Hardware Application Engineering - Board & System Design
Marvell TechnologyJob Title
Senior Principal Engineer, Hardware Application Engineering - Board & System Design
Role Summary
Senior individual contributor responsible for guiding customer hardware design-in and reference platforms for Marvell Ethernet Switch and UALink silicon. Focus areas include board architecture, PCB stack-up and material selection, power architecture, thermal and mechanical integration, SI/PI, and ensuring designs are manufacturable and production-ready.
Work within Marvell's U.S. Customer Solutions Group, partnering with customers, silicon, packaging, and internal hardware teams to deliver reference designs and productization support.
Experience Level
Senior - typically 15+ years of experience in hardware design; at least 7 years focused on board and system design for high-speed SerDes platforms.
Responsibilities
Provide senior technical leadership across customer engagements, reference designs, and productization for high-speed switch and AI fabric platforms.
- Advise customers from early architecture through production ramp on platforms using Marvell switches and UALink silicon.
- Review customer schematics, PCB stack-ups, materials, and system architecture; identify risks and recommend mitigations.
- Define, develop, and support Marvell reference and evaluation platforms; provide schematic, layout guidance, and hands-on bring-up.
- Drive PCB stack-up strategy and material selection (low-loss laminates, copper roughness, glass weave, via construction) to meet high-speed and cost targets.
- Design and review power delivery architectures (PDN, sequencing, decoupling) for high-current ASICs.
- Advise on thermal design, mechanical integration, and cooling strategies (air, liquid, immersion) for reliability and performance.
- Provide SI/PI guidance, review customer simulations, and perform targeted simulations when required.
- Lead hardware bring-up support, lab debug, root-cause analysis, and production issue resolution at customer sites and ODM/CM labs.
- Develop and deliver technical training for customers and internal teams; represent Marvell in technical briefings and industry forums.
- Capture field feedback to influence silicon I/O, packaging, and platform roadmaps.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- 15+ years in hardware design, development, and validation of high-speed networking or compute systems.
- 7+ years specifically in board and system design for high-speed platforms (25G NRZ through 112G/224G PAM4 and beyond).
- Proven full-lifecycle ownership of complex high-speed boards: architecture, schematic, layout guidance, and bring-up.
- Expertise in PCB stack-up design and material selection for high-layer-count, high-speed boards.
- Deep experience with power architecture for high-current ASICs, PDN design, sequencing, decoupling, and tolerance analysis.
- Strong background in thermal design and mechanical integration for high-power networking and AI systems.
- Working knowledge of SI/PI principles and hands-on lab debug using industry-standard equipment.
- Experience with high-speed interfaces (Ethernet, PCIe, DDR, advanced SerDes) and design for reliability, manufacturability, and testability.
- Customer-facing experience supporting complex technical engagements and delivering technical training; excellent communication skills.
- Eligibility to access export-controlled technology may be required; non-U.S. applicants may be subject to export license review.
Nice-to-have:
- Direct experience with Ethernet switch platforms and emerging open AI fabric standards.
- Experience targeting megascale data center deployments and ODM/CM manufacturing flows (DFM/DFT, qualification, reliability testing).
- Familiarity with advanced cooling (liquid, immersion) and EDA tools (Cadence Allegro/Sigrity, Mentor/Siemens Xpedition/HyperLynx).
- Proven ability to influence silicon and platform roadmaps from customer and field insights.
Education Requirements
PhD, Master's, or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
