Senior Physical Design Engineer
Role Summary
Join the advanced silicon team to lead block-level physical implementation and PPA optimization from RTL to GDSII. The role requires taking ownership of complex partitions, improving PPA through custom recipes, and automating flows to achieve production-quality tape-outs.
Experience Level
Senior — 4–7 years of relevant physical design experience (posting guidance). Expected to have multiple tape-outs and independent convergence experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities focus on block-level RTL-to-GDSII flow ownership, PPA tuning, and automation.
- Lead physical implementation of complex blocks from synthesis and floor-planning through CTS, routing, and sign-off.
- Develop and optimize PPA recipes via deep analysis of timing paths, power profiles, and congestion.
- Automate repetitive tasks and build analysis tools using Tcl and Python.
- Independently converge partitions to clean GDSII, resolving DRC/LVS, IR drop, and timing issues.
- Collaborate with RTL and DFT teams to left-shift constraints and improve routability and timing early in the flow.
- Own partition-level deliverables and support tape-out readiness activities.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and practical experience for immediate contribution.
- Experience: 4–7 years in physical design with at least 2–3 successful tape-outs.
- Tool mastery: Hands-on experience with industry EDA tools (example: Cadence Innovus/Tempus).
- Automation: Proficient in Tcl (tool control) and Python (data parsing and flow automation).
- PPA skills: Demonstrated ability to improve power, performance, and area via floor-planning and placement tuning.
- Analysis & debugging: Strong STA (static timing analysis), EM/IR, and physical verification (DRC/LVS/ERC) debugging skills.
- Convergence: Ability to take a partition from early/"dirty" RTL to sign-off quality with minimal supervision.
- Nice-to-have: Experience driving custom CTS, advanced routing strategies, and sign-off flow optimizations.
